For fall/winter 2019, Tory Burch gives her brand of chic American sportswear a slightly artsier, more irreverent spin—but it is still underpinned by a characteristic sense of ease. Fluid silhouettes are countered with tailored pieces, resulting in a modern balance between looking polished and feeling relaxed. With the bell sleeves, velvet ruffles, eelskin boots, sequins and paillettes; there is more of a decorative sensibility than usual, but Burch refines and restrains it in classically breezy Tory style.

As the designer herself puts it, this season is about “a mix-match of revamped classics—floral prints, graphic stripes, menswear materials and romantic silhouettes. There’s a modern eccentricity to raw fringe, exaggerated ruffles, knife-pleats, cut-out glass jewellery, deconstructed bags and sharp boots.”

Of the bags and boots shown, the Gigi shoes and Kira bags are particular standouts. The Gigi, introduced in pre-fall 2019, makes a comeback in various iterations. There are the 70mm booties with the stacked heels plated in the brand’s brass logo, evoking a downtown New York City kind of cool; there the knee-high boots that jive with the season’s feeling for Seventies flair; all the way to sturdy, practical block-heeled flats.
The Kira bag is crafted from supple Nappa leather and comes with an adjustable chain and leather strap for maximum versatility. Composed of clean, uncluttered lines, it is the colours that take centrestage, ranging from cool neutrals like black, white and camel to pop brights like coral, red and emerald. Chevron quilting further elevates the Kira bags with a graphic and tactile element. As a modern high-flying woman who understands the needs of a hardworking wardrobe, Burch has perfected the pieces that will seamlessly take you from brunch to boardroom to bar.
