1. The show invite came with two photographs of Burch’s parents, Buddy and Reva Robinson

Family occupies a very important place in Burch’s heart and informs almost everything the designer does. The pictures—one of a suave-looking Buddy in 1970 and the other of Reva and a young Burch—provided the first clue to what the collection will be about.

2. The catwalk show was held outdoors on the grounds of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum

Fans of the brand will know that Burch staged a spectacular runway presentation on the same grounds last September. The only difference? Unlike the brilliant rays of sunshine that bathed the garden in a summery glow last year, today’s event was marked by cloudy weather. Still, that didn’t stop the designer from putting together a show that lifted the spirits.

3. The collection brought the mind to exotic places across the globe

Remember those photographs of Burch’s parents? The American designer explained in her show notes that her parents’ spirit for adventure (they’d sail to exotic locales across Italy, Greece, Morocco and Spain) has left an indelible mark in her. For spring/summer 2019, she wanted to recreate that feeling of wanderlust in her clothes, so she concocted a desirable mix of travel-ready caftans, knitted polos, safari jackets and scarf-print dresses.

4. The other stars of the show? The accessories—but of course!

And there were plenty. Models treaded the grass-and-gravel runway on either ombre-coloured booties, chunky sandals, espadrilles or sneakers. Tote bags were roomy and seemed made for that impromptu weekend getaway. Elsewhere, woven wide-brimmed hats also stole the show—we wanted to hop on the next flight out.
