Pierpaolo Piccioli is not any fashion designer. Known for his poetic visions, sublime collections and moving shows, the creative director of Valentino brings a new relevance to the ever-evolving world of fashion season after season, all while staying true to his identity and the codes of the house.

For fall/winter 2020, the designer made yet another bold statement, opening the show with muses dressed in strong black looks. Valentino’s usual billowing silhouettes gave way to tailored, uniform-like separates in a palette of blacks, blues and greys — a collection that stemmed from “the desire to focus on the humanity of individuals to depict and exalt their feelings and emotions, despite age, gender, race and disposition.”

While uniforms are often seen as items that erase individuality and uniqueness, Piccioli sought to “bring the individual to the fore” by stripping away colour and excess for the most part. He also presented gender-fluid looks — among them a fitted bustier paired with baggy trousers, and dresses worn with combat-esque boots — in a bid to promote inclusivity and equality.

Piccioli did, however, work the house red into some pieces and accessories, such as the new Atelier Bag Valentino Garavani 03 Rose Edition that were then sent to an exclusive cast of the #ValentinoEmpathy campaign — a special project imagined by Piccioli “as a result of the experience of all living in a new world during the period of social distancing” — to be worn with looks from the fall/winter 2020 collection.

Artists, models and friends of the house including Adut Akech, Christy Turlington, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anwar Hadid, Laura Dern, Naomi Campbell, and Liu Wen were photographed by their loved ones with whom they were spending time in lockdown.

Imbued with couture sensibilities and crafted with techniques usually applied to clothing, the Atelier Bag Valentino Garavani 03 Rose Edition are adorned with three-dimensional roses that are created with hand-moulded leather petals of different sizes, individually sewn onto each bag. Embroidered with a total of 90 leather petals on a shiny nappa leather base, this feat of exquisite craftsmanship takes approximately 10.5 hours to construct and is available in mini, small and tote sizes, as well as a various colourways: nero, cerise, ivory, rosso and rose canelle. There’s already a global waiting list for the bags, so time is of the essence.
