Vans Vault Is Releasing A Collection Inspired By Mexican Artist Frida Kahlo

It's a prime example of how her art continues to inspire 65 years after her passing

Frida Kahlo is a Mexican artist famed for her surrealist self-portraits and political views. She's also the first Mexican artist to have their art be part of the Louvre's collection. Not to mention, Kahlo was perhaps one of the biggest feminist figures of her time, and continues to touch the lives of women and the LGBTQ+ community till today. The Vault by Vans X Frida Kahlo collection is a prime example of how her art continues to inspire 65 years after her passing.

The collection feature curated Vans sneakers inspired by a curated selection of Kahlo's artworks. It's colourful and reminiscent of the vivid tropical hues that would've surrounded Kahlo in her life in Mexico, which often made its way into her art, The of Vans' styles were updated to pay homage to Kahlo's artworks—The Two Fridays (1939), Viva la Vida (1954) and Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird (1940).

This isn't the skate brands first foray into art collaborations. In 2018, Van's released a collection in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam. The collection featured Van Gogh's Skull, Almond Blossom, Sunflowers and self-portraits. 

On the luxury end of the fashion spectrum, Louis Vuitton collaborated with artist Jeff Koons to release limited edition bags featuring Koon's artistic recreations of works by Da Vinci, Titian, Rubens, Fragonard and Van Gogh, in coated canvas. So, expect a lot more fashion meet art moments in 2019.
