Virginie Viard’s arm candy for Chanel’s latest collection is tiny but mighty

Chanel’s cruise 2022 collection was shown in the south of France and while there has always been a sense of ease to Virginie Viard’s designs, this season—perhaps due to the carefree nature of the outdoor setting instead of the grandeur of the brand’s usual Grand Palais shows—the feeling of lightness was even more pronounced. While conceptualising the collection, Viard was inspired by Jean Cocteau’s Testament of Orpheus; the era in which the movie was set, the 1960s, also played a part in informing the collection’s design direction—a graphic black and white palette; sharp, clean lines; and a penchant for the short, small and sweet. These could have read as severe, but in Viard’s hands, they become playful—most notably in the accessories, especially the iconic quilted Chanel bags shrunken down to micro proportions and turned into mini metal minaudières or pinned whimsically with charms and trinkets.
