Every Sustainable Fashion Choice Made At The 2020 Oscars

From the vintage gowns to a dress made from offcuts, these were the stars that championed sustainability at the Oscars

February 15, 2020

Sustainability was clearly at the front of mind for many fashion designers, stylists and celebrities ahead of the Academy Awards, where a number of A-listers chose to champion vintage, pre-loved or sustainable fashion on the red carpet. From Margot Robbie’s archival Chanel gown to Gucci’s use of offcuts on Saoirse Ronan’s dress, here were 14 sustainable choices made on the red carpet.

Nominee Margot Robbie chose a vintage gown for the 2020 Academy Awards in the form of this Chanel design from the house's spring/summer 1994 couture collection. It is not the first time the actress has championed vintage Chanel, she wore a glitzy ensemble during the Cannes Film Festival last year from the house's spring/summer 2011 collection. Reality star (and vintage obsessive) Kim Kardashian West outdid herself with her archive gown at the Vanity Fair after-party, wearing the Oyster gown from Alexander McQueen's spring/summer 2003 collection, of which only two exist (and the other is sitting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art). A Christmas gift from her husband Kanye West, the gown was a perfect choice for the big night. Photo: Frazer Harrison / Getty

Another star who dug into the Chanel archives for the occasion was Penélope Cruz, who wore a black dual-hem dress from a collection designed in 1995. Photo: Kevin Mazur / Getty

This was the second outing for Jane Fonda's embellished red Elie Saab dress. The actress was first seen in the design during the Cannes Film Festival in 2014 and she chose to bring it back for her big moment last night, where she revealed the winner for the prestigious Best Picture award. And Fonda was not the only star to make a dress work for a second time – Elizabeth Banks slipped into a red, strappy Badgley Mishka dress for the Vanity Fair party, a design she had first worn for the same event 16 years ago. Photo: Getty

You might remember costume designer Sandy Powell making headlines with her ensemble at last week's Baftas, where she asked numerous A-listers to sign her white suit (which will be auctioned to raise money for a great cause). Powell chose to wear it again to the Academy Awards last night, where she no doubt picked up even more signatures. Photo: Kevin Mazur / Getty
