On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, BAZAAR looks to the years ahead with a respectful nod to the past. Teaming up with 20 photographers, artists and visual makers, BAZAAR draws on its heritage and love of the arts to present a pictorial narrative on fashion and beauty through a distinctly Singaporean lens.

"For this collaboration, I wanted to look back on the past with a sense of departure. It is as much of a reset as it is a new beginning; reflecting on an incredibly intense year with wit and wanderlust for the future. It’s also an homage to Hiro (Yasuhiro Wakabayashi), one of my biggest photographic inspirations who recently passed away at the age of 90." "Our starting point was Richard Avedon. We wanted that classicism, that graphic quality, the glamour—something that very much evokes mid-century couture and photography, which has been such a big part of the BAZAAR legacy. But we also wanted to shoot it in a way that reflects fashion today. Instead of a girl in a Cristóbal Balenciaga gazar dress, we have a boy in an Alexander McQueen nylon bomber jacket and skirt." "My work injects real life into fashion, fashion into real life, and it always incorporates an element of coloured lights in the frame. For this assignment, I looked back to the Hong Kong comic books of my youth and Pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat for a more graphic approach.” Coco Crush rings, Chanel. iPhone; watch, stylist’s own. "Without Blueprint illustrates the courage and determination to chart one’s own path while exploring unknown territory. Built on the idea of desire paths, this piece pays homage to BAZAAR’s ability to constantly challenge and redefine the boundaries of print and digital media.” Kasa Sack in Jade Green, GRAYE. “Jean Paul Gaultier’s iconic fragrances are immediately recognised for their artistic torso-shaped bottles that are collected by fans around the world. I shot them within National Gallery Singapore because the museum draws similarities to the perfumes in this respect: It’s an iconic building that houses several collections of art within its walls.” Photographer: Masano Kawana Stylist: Daphne Tso

“This image is an homage to, and an update of, the iconic September 1992 US BAZAAR cover with Linda Evangelista. That cover marked the coming together of the new BAZAAR power trifecta: Editor Liz Tilberis, art director Fabien Baron and photographer Patrick Demarchelier. We’ve remade it with a Singaporean face: Instead of Linda in a beaded lace sleeve, we have Gilbert and his full tattoo sleeves.” Tiffany HardWear necklaces, Tiffany & Co. “Inspired by the bright and playful elements of Gucci’s Décor & Lifestyle products, we wanted to capture the spirit of childlike wonder and the joy of finding whimsy in everyday moments.” Creative direction: Shermin Ng

“An exploration of how fashion may reflect the unconscious state of mind, this artwork depicts sartorial self-expression in an imagined world, where Schiaparelli’s work takes centre stage.” Coat-dress; trousers; platforms, Schiaparelli fall/winter 2021. “Twenty years ago, as a young and inexperienced photographer, I was given the chance to work with Harper’s BAZAAR, which was only just launching in Singapore. I went on to photograph over a hundred assignments for it—an experience I will forever be grateful for. For its 20th anniversary, I chose to photograph the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The original iPhone changed the world when it first launched in 2007 and it has cemented itself as a must-have fashion accessory with amazing communication and camera capabilities—much like BAZAAR, a fashion magazine but, at the same time, so much more.” Gourmette Equestre Triple Tour bracelet, Hermès Photographer: Darren Soh using iPhone 13 Pro Max Stylist: Alice Chua Model: Xavier Wong

“This is a story about our personal relationship with physical objects through the years; a girl growing up with her memories encapsulated within iconic tangibles from the world of consumerism.” Coat, Bottega Veneta. “My first shoot with BAZAAR took place about 10 years ago with Windy. We bonded right away because I’m a photography nerd and Windy is a fashion nerd. My work has always been about visual storytelling and here, we have a simple tale of a bag and a bird with a mind of its own that refuses to sit on the handle of said bag. Wishing BAZAAR an amazing 20th anniversary.” Bag, Louis Vuitton Photographer: Alvin Kean Wong Stylist: Rika Watanabe Commissioning editor: Gracia Phang

“I’ve been privileged to work with BAZAAR for many years and for this assignment, I wanted to contribute something different from my usual. BAZAAR has always been about joy and fantasy, and I wanted to bring that into the shot. Who knows? Maybe in 20 years, Isla will be reading the magazine regularly too.” Shirt, Maison Q. Socks; shoes, model’s own. Necklace, stylist’s own Photographer: Ching Stylist and set designer: Charmaine Ho Model: Isla Lee

“To celebrate 20 years of BAZAAR Singapore, I thought it’d be cool to build a brick luxury tote based on the classic Hermès Birkin bag and use our national colours to make a bold statement befitting of our birthday girl.” Photographer: Tan Wei Te Stylist: Daphne Tso

“A tribute to the ubiquitous plastic chairs that support our nation, propping us up at kopitiams and storerooms alike.” (Far left) Top; dress, Givenchy. (Middle) Top; skirt, Gucci. “The story behind TheFinalBosses figurine is a fascinating one: The founders wanted to highlight how our mental health is severely impacted by online bullying, not just online but in real life as well (the # signs on the eyes represent how tightly intertwined our lives are with digital platforms). Juxtaposing that are the sneakers, which stand as a reminder to take things in our stride, and to live mindfully and purposefully. I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of going analogue and working with old-school film, so I shot this using a Contax T3 camera.” Figurine, TheFinalBosses. Leather Gucci 100 Ace sneakers, Gucci Photographer: Ming Tan Stylist: Boon Tan

“I’m trained as a fine artist, but I’ve always been fascinated by graffiti and started exploring the art form in 2014. My art reflects the exploration of our spiritual ancestral roots, creating a world from the different cultures I’ve experienced, and it depicts my idea of what ancient Singapore might have been like. I incorporated a Gucci bag because fashion, like art, is a form of self-expression, and that to me is beautiful. Commissioning editor: Gracia Phang

“The title of the work is an amalgamation of the model’s name and the serial number of Diamerlyn’s imagined clone in the year 2079. I wanted to explore the relationship between a 2D still image and 3D art, where there are more possibilities to include elements from the imagination while having the ability to animate them. This visual presents an immersive virtual world where Diamerlyn gets to choose her own avatar and alter ego.” Embossed scuba bodysuit, MUGLER Photographer and stylist: Zantz Han Commissioning editor: Boon Tan Model: Diamerlyn/Basic Models 3D artist: Zac Ong Makeup artist: Kat Zhang Hairstylist: Junz Loke

“For this assignment, I wanted to work on something that has been around for a while but is still trendy today. The Dior Saddle bag, with its easily recognisable iconic shape, short shoulder strap and bold hardware, is the perfect icon for this brief. Drawing inspiration from past BAZAAR covers, many of which feature flowers, I chose to incorporate my signature floral embroidery as well.” Photographer: Tan Wei Te Stylist: Alice Chua

“To be honest, I didn’t really think about it. The light was nice, the colours were beautiful and it captures the feelings of the moment. It’s a shot that I’m happy with.” Dress; boots, Bottega Veneta Photographer: Paul McLean Stylist: Christopher Maul Commissioning editor: Windy Aulia Model: Mae Lapres/Premium Models Makeup artist: Claudine Blythman using SUQQU Hairstylist: Vanessa Richards Manicure: Philippe Ovak/MarieFrance Thavonekham Agency
