Dior's Cruise 2018 took place at the Canyon Open Space Preserve in Calabasas, California. This was also where films like Gone With The Wind were filmed. Maria Grazia Chiuri was intrigued by the fact that the desert mountain landscape was an image that not many would conjure up when they think of California. Also, it lends to her theme perfectly this year, with the dust clouds, hot air balloons and tented seating areas. Her Western style theme was inspired by Maria's favourite book, "Women Who Run With Wolves" as well as Christian Dior's Ovale Line that was inspired by the Lascaux dave discovery in the 1940s. Maria merges primitivity and femininity by incorporating Western elements whilst maintaining Dior's uber feminine cinched waist. The leather, laced up boots were a nice touch to rough up the overall look of sunset colours gowns. The ponchos, bags and hats certainly accentuated that Wild Wild West vibe, made couture with its intricate detailing and embroidery. We shall now wait to see how the rest of the world responds to this reinvention of Western classics, once the desert dust settles down.
