It may be a sort of last hoorah before the official end of red-carpet season, but the best looks from the 2021 Billboard Music Awards at Los Angeles’s Microsoft Theater have set the tone for the months to come. Between the unofficial sorbet colour trend seen from the likes of Saweetie and Alicia Keys, and the opulent amounts of embellishments and graphic lines seen on the night’s big winner, Doja Cat, the attendees weren’t afraid to go all out. What: Prada
Why: Kaavia’s mom sported a custom, form-fitting sequinned gown with a plunging U-shaped neckline. The sleeveless design featured a tailor column silhouette with a hovering hem. To complete her retro-inspired red-carpet look, Union wore a flipped ponytail updo and subtle yet sparkling jewellery pieces.
What: Balmain
Why: Pulling off a full runway look like only she can, the award-winning artist wore a striped plissé ensemble from the spring/summer 2020 lineup. She opted for the two-piece outfit with a turquoise neckpiece, instead of the yellow one seen on the catwalk. But in true Doja Cat fashion, she leaned in to the look with two skinny braids and shoulder-length earrings.

Why: Showing off the blingy three-piece coordinate set on Instagram, Padma Lakshmi went with a less traditional (but equally opulent) tailored suit by the famed brand. She kept the accessories minimal and added a lariat-style necklace to accent the plunging neckline. Topping the look off with a glittered silver clutch and subtle makeup, she let the embellished outfit speak for itself.
What: Tony Ward Couture
Why: The West Coast singer kept in line with the unofficial taffeta theme by donning a red ensemble from Parisian atelier Tony Ward. Fitted with an embellished bustier, the hourglass silhouette features mutton-style sleeves and a floor-sweeping hem. Kehlani finished the look with a diamond tennis necklace.
What: Mugler
Why: If you’ve been keeping up with the red-carpet looks during the 2021 awards season, then you know that creative director Casey Cadwallader’s pieces for Mugler have been everywhere. Instantly recognised by its scantily clad silhouettes and graphic lines, Fox’s dress from the spring/summer collection looks just as stunning on the red carpet as did on the runway.
What: Giambattista Valli
Why: The rapper had a full on princess moment on the red carpet in a peach-coloured strapless dress from Giambattista Valli. Detailed with ruffles, tulle, and an asymmetric hemline, the star’s full gown channeled Marie Antoinette in a major way. She wore her long ponytail slicked back and rocked a pair of point-toe iridescent pumps.
What: Valentino
Why: Leaning in to her commitment to go make-up free, the fresh-faced singer wore a bubblegum-pink pants set and an intricate braided hairdo. She also wore a blush-coloured lip to complement her dramatic shawl and train. The hems of her pants fell well past her ankles covering her coordinated (but not overly match) point-toe pumps.
What: Carolina Herrera
Why: Never afraid to make a statement on the red carpet, the award-winning movie star wore a tiered off-the-shoulder gown from heritage label Carolina Herrera. Emblazoned in mix of polka-dot prints, the exaggerated ruffles were spliced with a high slit up the front to create more balanced proportions.
