Comme des Garçons' Most Avant-Garde Catwalk Moments

What to expect at next week's Met Gala

Comme des garcons

The theme of next week's Met Gala is Comme des Garçons/Rei Kawakubo, which will be only the second time ever a living designer has been honoured at the event (the first being Yves Saint Laurent in 1983).

Kawakubo is known for pushing the boundaries on the catwalk and treading the line between high fashion and fine art, so we expect to see some of the most avant-garde red-carpet outfits of all time.

Want to know what to expect? We have rounded up 10 of the most 'out there' moments from the Comme des Garçons catwalk. We can't wait to see what the night will hold.

Another one of the most abstract designs from Kawakubo came in her most recent collection, last season in Paris. The designer questioned "The future of the silhouette" sending pairs of models down the catwalk in bubble-shaped cocoons. Just who will emulate this look? Photo: Getty

For autumn/winter 2006, it was all about "the persona — what's in front, and what's behind," which saw a fusion of menswear with Victorian-inspired fashion. Venetian masks and deconstructed berets finished it off. Photo: Getty

The same season also saw this look, which took top-to-toe florals to a new extreme. Not dissimilar in concept to Kim Kardashian's Givenchy Met Gala gown in 2013. We predict a sequel. Photo: Getty

The theme of this collection was "18th Century Punk". There was plenty of pink – and in this look, plenty of ruffles. We suspect Rihanna might be the one to try this out. Photo: Getty

We'd be very surprised if more than a few guests don't embrace a headpiece at this year's gala. This particular one was shown on the spring/summer 2017 catwalk. Made of glass, some said they represented the idea of fragility. Photo: Getty

Said to be inspired by David Lynch's 1980 film, The Elephant Man as well as the Hindu elephant god Ganesh and even gas masks, hairdresser Julien dYs – who has been working with the house for a decade – created this oiled masterpiece on the models' hair. We could see Jared Leto recreating this look on 1 May. Photo: Getty

"Wonderland, where nothing is as it seems" were the notes for this particular show, which saw plenty of interesting veils and the use of netting – an element we're sure to see at Monday's gala. Photo: Getty
