Disney’s Frozen The Broadway Musical Descends Upon Singapore With Majestic Sets And Stunning Costumes

Let it go.

Frozen

A cold snap is making its way to Singapore, in all its musical glory. Disney’s hit Broadway adaptation of Frozen will make its only Southeast Asian stop at the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands in February 2023.

Most of us are already familiar with the films which captured the hearts of millions worldwide with addictive songs, lovable characters and mystical storytelling, but what will this musical entail?

Without a doubt, the animated films nailed the characters’ outfits, especially Elsa’s iconic wardrobe change during the ‘Let It Go’ scene. The musical is no different, with a total of 440 costumes taking to the stage. That includes Elsa’s ice gown, made of 14,000 crystals and beads, which took over three months to complete.  “I know it looks quite light and delicate, but it weighs many kilograms,” said Jemma Rix, who plays Princess Elsa.  Resident director Benjamin Osbourne also revealed that there are a total of 120 pairs of shoes and 90 wigs that were custom-made for the play.

What would Frozen be without its majestic scenery and frosty landscapes? The sets weigh about 45 tonnes and come with an additional 20 tonnes of automation, which will transport the audience into a tangible rendition of Arendelle.  “Every night, the proscenium that’s designed by Christopher Oram looks like a beautiful wooden sculpture – it’s massive. There’s also a lot of hidden Mickeys and easter eggs throughout the set. The magic in this production is incredible,” said Osbourne.

While the storyline is like the first film, there are 12 new numbers written just for the musical including “Monster,” which Rix sings during the second act.  The actress did not hold back when belting out the song, which gives the audience an introspective look at Elsa’s conflicting thoughts and emotions. “Although it’s quite heavy, it is also deep and reflective, and shows that Elsa is a good person,” said Rix. Of course, crowd favourites such as “Let It Go” and Olaf’s light-hearted song “In Summer” will also be included in the play.

Portraying beloved characters can be daunting and both Rix and actor Matt Lee, who plays Olaf in the musical, felt the pressure when they clinched their roles. However, the pair have since embodied the iconic characters and added their own personalities to differentiate themselves from the stars of the film.
“We should not be a carbon copy or the magic of who you are is lost. Everyone is unique, and creativity and uniqueness should be embraced,” said Rix, who is careful not to play Elsa like Idina Menzel.

Lee originally auditioned for the role of Prince Hans but was later asked to audition for Olaf instead, which worked out in his favour.
“I am now much happier with where I am. With Olaf, the glass is always half-full and playing him is so much fun,” said Lee, who must tell the story through his own facial expressions while controlling the Olaf puppet, which has moving eyelids, feet and hands.

Despite being a Disney production, Osbourne reassured attendees the musical can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
“The humour of this show is so adult, it’s so funny. I think they will find something really gorgeous about it. To hear the adults after the show is more exciting to hear than hearing the children speak, honestly,” said Osbourne.
