The devil’s in the details of Alexander McQueen’s Fall Winter 2023 collection, which certainly put Creative Director Sarah Burton’s talent for tailoring to the test. With impeccably sewn suits and corsets cut to near-surgical precision, it’s safe to say Burton succeeded in spades. As it turns out, Burton herself made subtle comparisons between fashion and surgery in her show notes, referring to human anatomy and the “exploration of beauty and power through tailoring.” Subverting expectations of what fashion could and should be, there are sinister hints of blood and guts throughout the collection, an ode to Alexander McQueen’s own tendency to veer into unfamiliar – and often controversial – territory for fashion.

Inspired by actress Cate Blanchett in Tar and the anatomical drawings of Leonardo da Vinci, the collection also reflects humanity’s relationship with nature – and furthermore, the relationship between predator and prey. The collection’s most prominent motif – an orchid, which resists being rooted and grows in the wild. Fiery red and ethereal silver shine throughout the collection, which also features a piece reminiscent of McQueen’s own ruby red Joan of Arc dress from the Fall 1998 ready-to-wear runway show. All in all, a collection nothing short of the high drama the brand is best known for.
