Before the gloom of Covid-19 hit Italy overnight, its fashion capital Milan played host to a spectacular fall/winter 2020 season, as well as a slew of Korean A-list names. In the absence of Asian celebrities from everywhere else, K-star power was strongly felt in the city. Singer-songwriter IU (Lee Ji-eun) kickstarted the week at Gucci, where models stood on a rotating glass carousel, dressed splendidly in Creative Director Alessandro Michele’s signature hotchpotch of varied references from hippie to grunge. At Moncler Genius, we shuffled between 12 creatively curated installations (reinterpreted by designers like JW Anderson and Rimowa) while rubbing shoulders with Hwang Min-hyun from boyband NU’EST and Hollywood star Will Smith.
Blackpink‘s Lisa Manoban greeted screaming fans with a killer smile on the steps of Fondazione Prada while we checked in at Bar Luce, designed by American director Wes Anderson and set up within the same compound, for the ’gram. As always, Miuccia Prada had spot-on solutions to what women want in this day and age—masculine pieces like a belted jacket with strong shoulders, paired with delicate ones like a fringed skirt—which were a nod to power without sacrificing femininity.
At Fendi, Silvia Venturini Fendi championed diversity by casting plus sized as well as older models for her show. The House also explored new territory with London-based tech and lifestyle accessory brand Chaos to introduce smartwatch charms, earphone cases and other ‘technology jewellery’. Elsewhere during the week: Emporio Armani introduced its R-EA recycled capsule collection with messages on sustainability running across four walls; Korean actress Rachel Park Min-young, who was announced as the face of Tod’s a few days earlier, was in attendance to witness Creative Director Walter Chiapponi‘s debut collection for the brand; Versace’s first show combining both menswear and womenswear showed an abundance of signature chain mail and baroque prints; and Korean superstar Song Hye-kyo’s surprise appearance at Bottega Veneta concluded the K- star-studded week.
