26 Grown-Up Ways To Style Long Hair
Over the shoulder
image

Keeping your tresses sleek but not flat is a difficult task but Amanda Seyfried achieves it by curling just the ends of her hair and sweeping the lengths over one shoulder.

The fairytale braid
image

Adding a thin, pearl-accessorised braid to brushed-out waves, as demonstrated by Lily James, creates a hairstyle fit for a princess.

The bend
image

Add more movement to your hair by bending the lengths over a straightening iron. It works even if you then tuck your hair behind your ears, as Ashley Graham shows

Tendril bun
image

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley often throws her long hair up into a messy high bun, which accentuates her bone structure. To stop it looking too severe, follow her example and leave two tendrils out.

Slicked-back roots
image

Copy Blake Lively’s trick to keeping loose waves off your face by lightly slicking- back your roots. Try L’Oreal Professionnel’s Techni Art Pli, £11.50.

Straight as a whistle
image

Above all, uber-straight hair needs to be glossy so apply heat protector before employing your straighteners and try a shine spray as well to keep flyaways at bay. Naomi Campbell is your inspiration.

The Markle bun
image

Meghan Markle’s go-to hairstyle, the messy bun, might have broken royal protocol but it is a perfectly imperfect way to make long hair manageable. You can find more hairstyle inspiration from the Duchess of Sussex here.

Sleek pony
image

A ponytail is a simple way to keep long hair looking groomed. Just ensure your parting is clean and you control any messy-looking flyaways.

Milkmaid braid
image

Turn your pigtail plaits into a sophisticated up-do like Emily Blunt, by pinning them on top of each other at the crown of your head.

Layers
image

While face-shaping layers like those cut into Kaia Gerber’s hair are mainly the work of a good hairdresser, you can enhance them when straightening your hair by making your hair flick-out at the ends.

Crisp curls
image

Ensure your curls look healthy like Jourdan Dunn’s by using curl-defining products such as Color Wow’s Dream Coat for Curly Hair, £24.

Bended wave
image

For glamorous-looking hair that doesn’t take too much preparation, sweep your hair to one side, add a little voluminising powder like Davines’ Volume Creator, £45.50, to your roots and twist large sections of your hair around a curling iron.

Victoria's Secret waves
image

The Victoria’s Secret Angels are the queens of effortless, full-bodied waves. The trick is to style your hair into a centre-parting and then follow these steps.

Slicked-back
image

Follow Rihanna’s example and use lots of gel but also a diagonal parting to get an on-trend wet-look finish to your hair, while still adding volume to your crown.

Tucked curls
image

For additional body around your roots when wearing curls, tip your hair upside down, apply voluminising spray and tuck the under layers of your hair behind your ears like Emily Ratajkowski.

Sleek with lift
image

To stop super-sleek hair looking greasy or flat, slightly tousle your roots and use a touch of Oribe’s Dry Texturising Spray, £41, to add height at your crown. It’s a trick Bella Hadid often uses.

Voluminous curls

Jennifer Lawrence proves that you don’t need naturally curly hair to achieve big waves. The trick is to use a thin-barrelled curling wand, like Ghd’s Soft Curl Tong, £99, before brushing out the curls and using lots of lots of texture spray.

The braid
image

The longer your hair, the more impressive your braid can be. Use gel to keep flyaways at bay and cover the hairband with loose hair for Zendaya’s inch-perfect finish.

Far-side parting
image

As Penelope Cruz demonstrates, by parting your hair far across to one side, you’ll effortlessly add volume to your roots. Try Ghd’s Root Lift Spray, £11.01, for height that looks especially natural.

Half braids
image

Half-braids are a creative way to keep your hair off of your face, while still allowing you to embrace lots of volume through the lengths.

Boho
image

Laura Bailey proves that long waves don’t have to be overly-styled to look grown-up. Embrace a little fuzziness by changing the direction in which you use your curling iron and run your hands through your hair afterwards so the curls aren’t perfect.

The scrunchie pony
image

Upgrade your ponytail by ensuring it is high, super sleek and accessorised with a big, bold fashion scrunchie à la Hailey Baldwin.

Wet-look
image

To make wet-look hair wearable, so that you don’t appear as if straight out of the shower, sparingly apply Aveda’s Brilliant Rexturising Gel, £14, from lengths to ends so it looks sleek, but use pins not product to keep your hair flat to your head.

Crimpled ponytail
image

Take note of Joan Small’s ponytail as by enhancing the natural texture of your hair, either by brushing out your own curls or by using a crimping tool, you’ll hair will look so much thicker.

Hollywood waves
image

Alessandra Ambrosio’s Hollywood waves – best created using a wide-barelled curling wand – are a timeless ticket to looking glamorous.

The intricate up-do
image

If you want to experiment with your hair, try a double bun ponytail like Kate Mara. From the front it looks like a simple up-do; from the back, it’s a fun work of art.
