For his Gucci Cruise 2023 show, Alessandro Michele was inspired by the work of the German philosopher Walter Benjamin, who had the “extraordinary ability to illuminate connections, which would otherwise be invisible.”
“If any thinker was able to keep together things that were so distant in time and space, rearticulating them into bursting constellations, it was Walter Benjamin. To this man, who couldn’t survive without his quotations, my gratitude,” said Michele in the show notes.
Set at the Castel del Monte in Andria, Italy—a medieval architectural marvel that dates back to the 13th century—the collection’s opulent details (think: pearls, twinkling embellishments, gladiator shoes, ruffles and feathered concoctions), sheer lingerie looks, and bright and playful ’70s-esque pieces nodded to Michele’s celestial inclinations for this collection.
