Runway beauty looks have always been fascinating. Sometimes it’s pared down and barely there, but more often than not, it’s incredibly avant garde and almost unwearable in real life. But that’s what we’re here for – to help you translate even the most over-the-top runway makeup looks into real life. Fall 2019 was fun, in terms of beauty. From smears of neon to sophisticated matte red lips, and glitter overdoses to flushed cheeks, everything was fair game. Read on to find out how to wear these looks IRL.

Spotted at Carolina Herrera and Mugler, models were sent down the runway with smears of neon eyeshadow across lids. It’s impactful, but not the most wearable of looks, we gather. Instead, make like the models at Guy Laroche and Natasha Zinko and replace neon shadow with a flick of coloured eyeliner.

Try: Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner, $38, available at Sephora.

For fun nights out, why not take inspiration from Jean Paul Gaultier, Dries Van Noten and Halpern by adorning your peepers with an overload of glitter? If you’re worried about glitter being too dramatic, start small by using a glitter eyeliner. For those who are ready to embrace their best maximalist selves, we recommend using a cream eyeshadow base first, and then pressing loose glitter onto your lids. Just make sure you’re using products safe for use on the eyes.

Try: Hourglass Scattered Light Glitter Eyeshadow, $49 for 3.5g, available at Sephora.

Perhaps taking influence from the rising popularity of “e-girls”, flushed cheeks were spotted at Chanel, Aigner and Rebecca Minkoff. Pair this look with soft pink lips and rosy eyeshadow to create a cohesive, monochrome look. We recommend using a cream product – apply it with your finger and allow the product to melt into skin for a natural finish.

Try: Kjaer Weis Cream Blush, US$51.96 (approx. S$72), available at Net-A-Porter.

Forget grungy, smeared eyeliner – this season’s smoky eye has a serious element of glam to it. It’s like if Kurt Cobain’s groupies suddenly scored invites to the Met Gala, we think. Instead of using jet-black eyeshadow, try soft browns and greys. Pair it with MLBB lips, or even a reverse ombre lip, for that extra bit of 90s flair. Keep the rest of your look clean, preferably with a semi-matte base.

Try: Tom Ford Beauty Eye Color Quad in Double Indemnity, $127, available at Sephora and Tom Ford Beauty counters.

Is it really autumn if we don’t see at least one matte red lip? Of course not. The perennial favourite made its appearance on multiple runways, including Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Paco Rabanne. If it ain’t broke, why fix it? For a dramatic look, pick a deep berry shade. Otherwise, keep things light and breezy with a bright blue-red. Try blotting with a piece of tissue, and then follow up with a light dusting of setting powder to really mattify your lips and make sure all that pigment stays put.

Try: NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment Lipstick in Light My Fire, $40 for 5.5ml, available at NARS counters and Sephora.

Twiggy’s iconic lashes have made its way back onto the runway once again, and you can count on it to happen every few years. To channel the spirit of this look, load up on mascara on your bottom lashes. You can also recreate it by drawing tiny, spiky lashes on your bottom lash line. We recommend a fine brush liner for this. Make sure to have a light hand and keep your strokes fine to avoid veering into theatrical territory.

Try: K-Palette 1 Day Tattoo Real Lasting Eyeliner 24H Waterproof in Super Black, $19.90, available at Watsons.

Who says lip gloss and juicy puckers are only for the height of summer? Channel your inner Glossier girl and go high shine. Choose a neutral MLBB for a sophisticated and understated look, or go big with a reverse ombre lip (as seen at Alice + Olivia). Bonus: you get to enjoy fuller, plumper lips, sans fillers.

Try: Glossier Lip Gloss, US$14 (approx. S$19), available at Glossier.com.
