In the gilded halls of Paris’ Opéra Garnier, Thom Browne SS23 played out a Cinderella story retold through an Americana lens. A cast of truncated fairytale characters take the stage in dramatic taffeta opera coats, embellished lavishly with large scale lapels and frilled neck ruffs, that envelop the body. Then, the transformation: the capes are stripped off and reveal another alter ego. Candy coloured pea coats become playfully short, flamboyant polka dots permeate impeccably tailored suiting, and full skirts form surrealist conical silhouettes. Whimsey reached its height when the finale look was accompanied by a pink convertible. This was the American dream brought to life on the Parisian stage.
