Kim Kardashian has become a MET Gala staple over the years, transforming from a reality TV star to a bona fide beauty and fashion icon. The event simply wouldn’t be the same without Kim’s viral looks – both the good and bad.

This was Kim’s MET Gala debut and while fans criticised the upholstery-esque design by Givenchy, it will continue to live on in fashion history as one of the most mind-boggling looks to ever grace the steps of the museum.
This dress conjured up so many tweets and reactions that it had a life on its own. The late comedian Robin Williams even compared the dress to those he wore for his role as Mrs Doubtfire. Now, that is iconic.

While beautiful, many people felt that this blue-and-black satin number was missing something. The theme for the gala that year was Charles James: Beyond Fashion and many celebs had shown up in complex looks made from various unconventional fabrics and materials.
The couple surprised everyone by sticking too closely to the formal dress code. That’s not all. This wasn’t the original dress Kim was supposed to wear. Instead of blue satin, the dress was supposed to be made in gold leather, which might have been a better choice.
This is a jaw-dropping gown but it just didn’t quite fit the theme of the year – China: Through The Looking Glass.
This Roberto Cavalli number was inspired by Cher’s sheer getup from the MET Gala in 1974, which is one of the best looks in the history of the event.
This year’s theme focused heavily on the integration of fashion and technology, which also meant that we were bombarded with a number of silver ensembles.
Despite that, Kim stood out from the crowd as her Balmain look checked many boxes. The shimmering dress followed creative director Olivier Rousteing’s proclivity for structured silhouettes while capturing the cold and hard exterior of machinery and robotics.
The MET Gala is a costume party and going larger than life is expected. Unfortunately, Kim went for a laid-back route with this white gown by Vivienne Westwood that felt a little underwhelming.

Again, Kim’s gold mesh dress was a major let-down during this year’s MET Gala because everyone else brought their A-game.
Heavenly Bodies: Fashion And The Catholic Imagination was by far the most memorable theme. Kim’s dress was stunning but it paled in comparison to other celebrities such as Rihanna, Blake Lively and Cardi B, who stole the show with their celestial looks.
With the theme set on Camp: Notes on Fashion, most celebrities went with the obvious options of loud prints and a sea of plumage but not Kim.
Taking Thierry Mugler out of retirement, the dress took eight months to complete — everything was impeccably executed from the details to the ruching and beading.
This was also Kim’s most uncomfortable dress to date. She had to take lessons on how to breathe while wearing the extremely tight corset and she could not even sit during dinner.

Perhaps, her most unexpected look to date would be this head-to-toe Balenciaga outfit that sparked the creation of many memes and inspired many Halloween costumes last year.
Kim initially fought against wearing the mask for the all-black look but creative director Demna Gvaslia believed that the power of her celebrity status would shine through the mask and he was right.
Was this dress accurate to the theme of the Gilded Age? Not particularly but itasw still an iconic fashion moment. After months of speculation, Kim stepped out in the very same “Happy Birthday, Mr President” dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in 1962 when she sang Happy Birthday to President John F Kennedy.
This Bob Mackie design has the title of the most expensive dress ever after being acquired by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum for a staggering USD$4.8 million. Kim was only allowed to wear the dress on the red carpet for photo ops, before changing into a replica when she entered the museum.
