Fashion In Review: Highlights From London Fashion Week FW17 Day 3

See all the best looks from Anya Hindmarch, Topshop Unique, MM6 Maison Margiela, Mulberry and Mary Katrantzou

February 20, 2017

The sheer scale of Anya Hindmarch’s set — a make-believe “mountain” that rose at least two-storeys from within the cavernous hall of The Royal Horticultural Society’s headquarters in Vincent Square — was enough to qualify it as one of London Fashion’s Week most memorable. Models descended from the summit on a zig-zag path carved onto the slope (though a few trekked up from the base) kitted-out in clothes that played out Hindmarch’s playful answer to winter dressing and wanderlust. There were coats with furry collars, argyle knits matched with knickers and jackets adorned with Scandinavian Kurbits.

The scene at @anyahindmarch's fall/winter 2017 show? An "architectural mountain", its angular slopes looking as if carved by computers and machines instead of Nature. Hindmarch's collection felt anything but — this was a showing that gave après-ski a new look with coats in blush tones, plush shearling stoles, argyle sweaters, Scandinavian Kurbit and furry sandals —Associate Fashion News Editor @geraldtan #HarpersBazaarSG #LFW

Travel partially underscored Topshop Unique’s latest collection, though the show notes suggested that these were clothes made for the young urban explorer with a taste for the eclectic. The high street label has always appealed to the selfie-loving, millennial crowd, so it drew up a youth range of easy pieces such as oversized sweatshirts and effortless dresses with asymmetrical slits that not only looked picture perfect, but also reminded us why London is the epicentre of the seismic Youthquake movement.

For today's Instagram-crazy millennial, @topshop Unique's newest collection is selfie-perfect. The high street label's runway line rehashed influences that ranged from to street to Britpop, Ibiza to London (where else?). The best part? Those weened on a diet of immediacy don't have to wait months to get their hands on the collection. It's now available to shop online. Speaking of the impulse to travel, MM6 Maison Margiela’s presentation at famed auction house Christie’s in Mayfair left us yearning to cross the English Channel for the City of Lights with a wardrobe for an incredibly modern Parisienne — as heavy winter coats got reassessed and reimagined.

Sometimes there are days when you just miss Paris. And today is one of those days. Hidden within the auction house Christie's in Mayfair, the presentation of the @mm6maisonmargiela #FW17 show was what you would expect from the designers'-designer's contemporary line. Models dressed in the coming season's offerings of oversized knits and shearling coats, stood alongside studio technicians at work — in dioramas of ateliers, waiting rooms and photo studios. And set to the soundtrack of instrumental Chinese music and the familiar mix of the technicians' spoken French and English. Ah, time to cross the Channel! —London Fashion Correspondent @onefatboy #HarpersBazaarSG #LFW

“Britishness” is integral to Johnny Coca‘s transformation of Mulberry, and he’s done more than a decent job reinstating its relevance in fashion. Coca expanded on the theme again, but instead of adapting preppy uniforms for Mulberry’s vernacular like he did last season, he relied on bookish checks, boxy jackets, knitted dresses, capes as if cut from quilted horse blankets, plus good old florals to win over more fans for the brand.

The day culminated with Mary Katrantzou‘s ode to Disney! In a collection inspired by the 1940 animation “Fantasia”, dresses and luxurious fur coats were dusted with fairy dust in the form of embellished crystals that dripped and rustled to the delight of our eyes and ears.

@marykatrantzou's #FW17 show just made Sunday nights more bearable. And it's just what we needed for the hump day that is Day Three of #LFW. From the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra's live performance of Hans Zimmer's "Time"; to Katrantzou's sublime mastery of colours; to the huggable plush fur chubbies and the rustle embellished fringe dresses made — it was pure multi-sensory delight. We are now SO energised for Monday! Blues begone! —London Fashion Correspondent @onefatboy #HarpersBazaarSG
