After the abrupt departure of Alessandra Facchinetti from Tod’s last spring, it seemed that the fate of the brand’s new venture into ready-to-wear—which had been Facchinetti’s challenge to kickstart when she joined three years ago—was hanging in the balance. But the design team carried on, and for Spring 2017, showed a strongly edited collection of relaxed day wear with leather worked in seamlessly.
Grouped in three tableaus, each with a subtle shift in colour, Tod’s offered up an ultra luxe take on effortless every day style. Denim mixed playfully with leather and suede jackets, or was shown as a suit accented with python pockets and of course, a colourful python bag. As exotic a material as snake is, it looked young and fresh worked into shorts and mini skirts and paired with casual tops.
Tod’s even tried its hand at athleisure with a gently pleated leather skirt teamed with a cropped baseball jersey and silver sneakers, a light leather net dress and tweaked boxer shorts.
The crisp contrast of white and blue looked particularly appealing, especially when the leather pieces were blue, whether a tailored moto jacket or versions of the brand’s popular Wave bag.
Signature loafers and driving moccasins were refreshed in bright blue, white and python, and sometimes styled unexpectedly—with bikinis and sporty anoraks. If Tod’s continues to push new and unusual ways of showing leather, while still offering their faithful the bags and especially shoes they love, its ready-to-wear will stay on track.
