Jonathan Saunders' debut collection for the American brand

Welcome to a new era of Diane von Furstenberg. The brand introduced its first collection by Brit transplant Jonathan Saunders (who shuttered his own label last year). "It began with the mission to make desirable clothes that are effortless, but imaginative," the new chief creative officer announced. And desirable clothes are certainly on the agenda, showcasing DVF mainstays of print and color—like a romantic, poppy pink floral from a kimono paired with black sequins—seen through a fresh lens.

"It's about fluidity, movement, sensuality and spontaneity " Saunders explains. Add texture to that list. The designer showed a clever mix of paillettes and fur stoles, easy neutrals like camel against super-glamorous silver—and it all comes together in a decidedly cool way.

If the current DVF model is all about dressing women for work, this collection feels more ready for play. A flowing white dress emphasizes dramatic cuffs, tone on tone stripes and off-the-shoulder detail for a subtle sensuality.

The mix of prints feels non-contrived. A fold over waist trouser, shoulder bag and grid-worked trench give a nod to DVF's workwear history while feeling decidedly young and interesting.

If there's anything DVF acolytes have relied on from day 1 it's a great, easy dress and Saunders didn't disappoint. A scarf print gown lends a familiar '70s vibe without relying on old tropes. Overall, it's a fun and welcome introduction to a new chapter for a storied New York brand that women have come to trust.
