The closest New York comes to the history-laden, romance-inducing palazzos of Italy is the Frick, where Carolina Herrera shows her collections. And it was the perfect venue to get lost in her dreamy, Audrey-ish Spring 2017 offering, starting with a just-about-perfect black day dress with charming shoulder ties and cinched waist that recalled all the things we love about genteel dressing—which she smartly paired with smoking slippers instead of kitten heels or other.
Stripes, ruffles and layers of every kind worked together to create the brand codes Mrs. Herrera has carefully crafted. Even when she got sporty, it was still completely identifiable as House of Herrera. Case in point: a rugby-inspired top tucked into a swath of black ballerina tulle.
There were a ton of the pretty dresses her faithful clientele depends on, from feathered frocks to black and white gingham day dresses and striped lace looks. She alternated styling to keep things modern—paired over white dress shirts, worn with flats, sewn with pockets…
A single wallpaper floral showed up in a soft rose bunch set against a muted beige back. The idea of matching shoes to skirt seems to be taking root this season, and this was one of the best examples.
Evening was nothing but refinement—lace gowns, tulle confections, even a denim look with extra flounces. You could imagine Mrs. Herrera herself and her daughters in any one of these gowns.
