New York Fashion Week: 10 Best Looks From 3.1 Phillip Lim FW17

The designer’s use of color and proportion are a study in simplicity

3.1 Phillip Lim fall/winter 2017

Perhaps the red carpet beneath 3.1 Phillip Lim’s runway was a discreet way of preparing attendees for Valentine’s Day. Whether intended or not, the designer’s Fall 2017 collection was filled with the sort of clothes that one could easily fall in love with. A subtle play between style, comfort, and function, it is not very difficult to envision the Phillip Lim woman. She is not afraid of colour, she doesn’t shy away from experimenting with fashion, and she likes modern twists on classic ideas.

The show featured a striking use of colour with the sort of restraint we’ve come to expect from Lim. Brilliant pinks and radiant blues were the highlights of the collection. A pair of oversized pleated cobalt pants juxtaposed against a sleeveless colourblocked blouse was a smart play on proportion. Roomy tailored trousers were revisited throughout the runway, giving the models the appearance of being at total ease.

A set of white dresses was a breath of fresh air, succeeding completely in their simplicity, in many ways a departure from the rest of the collection. A pair of voluminous down-filled puffer coats offered attendees a utilitarian answer to the brief, unexpected snowfall taking place just outside, while a bright pink mid-calf length coat suggested that winter could be just as tasteful as it can be practical.
