For this edition of Paris Fashion Week, many brands develop fantastical narratives to showcase their Fall Winter collections, a feat that would have been quite impossible to achieve in a live show.

Olivier Rousteing’s shows for Balmain are known for their throbbing nightclub ambiance, with a star-studded cast on stage and in the front row. Clearly not a viable option this season, Rousteing decides to go in a completely different direction and present the Fall Winter 2021 collection at the airport hangar next to a plane from Air France. And the result is nothing short of spectacular — the collection is a high octane celebration of air travel.

Dresses are gathered like parachutes, jumpsuits echo fighter jet flight suits, and belt buckles are modelled after airplane seatbelts. There is also an array of shearling-lined flying jackets, oversized bombers, and Rousteing’s take on the double-breasted pilot suit.

The travel accessories are also dreamy. Travel pillows, decked out in signature Balmain gold hardware, are worn around the models’ necks as dramatic collars, and, when turned upside down and held by the chain, also doubled as handbags. Towards the end of the show, the models become astronauts, strutting out in silver metallic jumpsuits and minidresses, punctuated with pops of neon.
