For Dolce & Gabbana spring/summer 2022 collection, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are clearly on a post-lockdown revenge dressing warpath. Their Metropol is transformed into a mirrored prism and a rock concert atmosphere created with rotating stage lights along the long runway, with a heart-thumping sound track.
Just like the venue, the collection is studded, embellished, embroidered and encrusted in jewels. These covered the bras and ‘midriff floss’ of lingerie-inspired tops, sprinkled over slouchy jeans and pants, encircled mini skirts like and covered every inch of rainbow coloured jackets.

Harking back to the house’s 2000s aesthetic — which on hindsight those could have been the current Instagram feed of social media stars in 2021 — there is a revival of the sequinned string bikini and barely-there belt skirt, famously sported by supermodel Gisele Bündchen. Other throwbacks include reference to J.Lo on T-shirt prints, as well as an uncanny, perhaps tongue-in-cheek, rendition of a sheer silk dress that might have momentarily made you believe you were at another show altogether.
As an homage to the noughties, there is an unabashed approach to overt sexiness. Underwear becomes outwear in the form of vampy corset dresses and diaphanous leotards. Cut-outs and transparent fabrics reveal lacy bralettes and monogrammed knicker bands. There really is no better way to dress up as we get back to leading our normal lives once again.
