At Valentino haute couture show, the message is clear: Beauty has no rules. We have been whisked off to beautiful Rome where the fall/winter 2022/2023 haute couture show is held on the very streets, right down the Spanish steps. Creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli continues his work to create a democratic, inclusive vision of beauty, that includes all genders, and we are taken back to the Eternal City, where the Maison’s Atelier is located.
Movement, so key to the designer and the maison, both literally and figuratively is manifested in those dramatic feather headdresses, capes and skirts that seem to encapsulate the models in weightless orbs of red, pink, green and blue. Then there are the oversized 3D flowers that encrust the bodices of dresses, and the lapels of mens’ blazers, plus those endearing pussy bows whose long tails trail in the twilight breeze. As a metaphor, fashion is defined by movement, through both time and space, whether it is striding forward at speed or taking indulgent visits back to the beginning.
