It was a night of stargazing at Versace. Making her runway debut was Dua Lipa — she not only opened and closed the show, her music also served as the soundtrack. That’s not all. Supermodel Naomi Campbell, who was fierce in a hot pink suit, lent her megawatt presence to show, as did Gigi Hadid in a skin tight PVC dress as well as Emily Ratajkowski showing off her midriff in a silk crop top and a low-hung wrap skirt. The Queen of Pop Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes Leon turned it up in a silver sequinned bodycon dress. Other famous faces in the lineup included Adut Akech and Precious Lee.
The Versace Spring/Summer 2022 collection was a high-octane homage to the house’s icons. There were real life Barbie dolls in candy-coloured mini dresses, neon tights and metallic strappy platform shoes. The silk scarf was the undisputed star — from dresses spliced together with buttons, tailored blazers and two-piece sets, to headbands, earrings, bralette tops, and bags.

The safety pin was also a recurring theme, harking back to the ’90s when a little known actress named Elizabeth Hurley attended a movie premiere with Hugh Grant in that dress held together precariously by safety pins. Today, Donatella Versace revived the spirit of that LBD in the form of sheer sequinned gowns, side-split dresses as well as blazer dresses, all fastened with the oversized safety pins embellished with the house’s medusa motif. These were also reinvented in multi-coloured versions on jacket and skirt closures, brooches, as well as earrings on both girls and boys.
