Some of my favourite fashion memories growing up in the early 2000s include unconventional maximalism, complete with glittery jelly sandals, ironic bold-lettered tees, and Swarovski-bedazzled flip phones. Although my mother would never have let me out of the house in a waist chain and low-rise jeans à la Paris Hilton, I was allowed to wear the funky, brightly-coloured jewellery that is currently having a renaissance.

“At the core, our current state of fashion is all about fun, empowerment, and embracing our unique selves, and it can also mean jewellery that’s playful while showcasing personality—and Y2K jewellery does just that,” Kendall Becker, a New York City trend forecaster, says. “The Y2K jewellery trend embraces the sentiment of having fun through the art of dressing with punchy hues, high shine, and tongue-in-cheek motifs. Plus, this a great avenue for sharing our personalities.”

Happy, nostalgic jewellery feels just right right now. Whether you’re looking to add a touch of whimsy and visual optimism to your jewellery box, or you just want to relive the early aughts, the following playful accessories are sure to brighten up your entire look.
