Sneakertopia: What To Look Out For At Singapore's Biggest Sneakerhead Exhibition

There’s no denying that sneakers have become quite a quintessential part of everyday life and street culture. Originally worn for functionality and comfort, sneakers have evolved and given special meaning to the individuals who don them. Think Michael Jordan and his dunks or Chuck Taylor and Converses. These specific pairs of shoes have become cultural icons in today’s world.

Originating from Los Angeles, the exhibition pays tribute to sneaker collectors, creators and all things pertaining to streetwear culture. This February, Sneakertopia: Step Into Street Culture opens its doors to the public at the ArtScience Museum Singapore. There, find sneaker collections belonging to Singapore-based icons like JJ Lin or see the different artworks by sneakerheads and street artists such as Josiah Chua, tobyato and Inkten.

Even if you’re not big on sneakers, you’ll definitely find something that’ll grab your interest. Whether you're there for the detailed artworks or the variety of Insta-worthy spots to capture your #OOTD, the exhibition welcomes individuals from all walks of life.

Be greeted by Sneakertopia’s Stone Lions! The artwork was created by tobyato, showcasing how he interlaces references from his own cultures.

Located in The Playground section of the exhibition, look out for a giant skateboard by Jonas Never. Have fun playing around with the large-scale wheeled device and take full advantage of being able to sit, lie or stand on it. It’s the perfect picture opportunity!

Are you a fan of JJ Lin? You’re in luck! JJ Lin has generously loaned the exhibition his personal street culture collection, open for the public to view! If you’ve ever been curious about his street style, this is the perfect opportunity to do so. With more than 5 sets of shoes and other iconic vintage items displayed, this is definitely a stop you won’t want to miss.

Dollar bills, dollar bills. Some sneakers can cost a fortune, and this part of the exhibition reflects exactly that. Even if you’re not that big of a sneakerhead, this is another great Instagrammable spot for you to work out that #OOTD pic with some killer soles.

Everyone is all too familiar with the famous Nike Air Jordans, an essential in the sneakerhead culture. While at the exhibition, look out for a large-scale version of the sneakers. Want to be even more fascinated? Here’s a hint: take a walk around the display and find a new perspective or vantage point to see another image in the same piece of artwork.

Obviously, the exhibition is filled with items which are larger than life. smoluk, the creative behind this particular piece of artwork, specialises in pop art which encourages viewers to think about humanity’s impact on planet Earth. The Super Large Superstar is made out of recycled materials and is one of the exhibition's must-sees.
