Break out your blush and throw out your beauty inhibitions. This season’s backstage makeup trends were all about electric color worn with fierce confidence.

The Best Makeup Trends For Spring 2017

Get your blush brushes ready—you're going to need them in a big way next spring. Whether applied with a heavy-hand and a nod to disco (like at Kenzo, left) or subtly blended from cheek to temple (Reem Acra, Chanel, Adam Selman) blush was meant to be seen on the spring runways. Leave subtlety at the door.

The beauty look at Fenty Puma relied on only two things: serious false eyelashes, and an intense pink cheek highlight. On the cheeks, makeup artists applied a bold sweep of Marc Jacobs Beauty Air Blush Soft Glow in Lush and Libido all the way up to the cheek and toward the temples. Then the Marc Jacobs Beauty Glistening Illuminator, a pearly cream highlighter, was rolled across the temples. The effect was an intense pop of pink shimmer, but in this day and age, there's no such thing as too much highlighter.

Glossy pink lips and a swipe of rosy blush (Chanel Coco Code Exclusive Creation Blush Harmony, available in January) made a colorful statement backstage at Chanel.

You can blame it on Stranger Things. The '80s are back and they're fresher than ever; just look at the glowing pink makeup seen backstage at Adam Selman. After prepping and moisturizing the skin, makeup artist Emi Kaneko traced a rosy, multipurpose cream color (MAC Casual Color in For Your Amusement) across the cheekbones, up toward the eyes, and all over the eyelids, giving that distinct '80s draping effect. The color was also dabbed on the lips.

It wouldn't be a backstage beauty round-up without some mention of red lipstick. But for spring 2017, we're also going to mention peach, electric orange, fuchsia, colorblocking, and purple-gray. Makeup artists experimented with a variety of lipstick colors and textures this season, from the matte cherry shade seen at Giambattista Valli (at left) to the pop of neon pigment at Jason Wu. Because sometimes all it takes to make a statement is one single tube of lipstick.

Jason Wu has always had a penchant for classic beauty. The man loves a red lip as much as the rest of us. This season, Wu served up exactly what you'd expect: a red lip. Kind of. Well, not really. "It's not your basic red, it's fluorescent red, if that exists," said makeup artist Yadim backstage. After applying a mix of two red lipsticks, he tapped some neon orange theater paint right in the center of the bottom lip. "It's a raver girl red," he says, imagining that girl thinking her basic red lipstick looks, well, basic. In his mind, she would smear on some neon paint before running out the door . The orange-red lips appeared on only a handful of models; the pop of color matched a similar shade on their gowns. All in all, it's the same Jason Wu girl we know and love, just cooler, sportier, and with a flair for neon.

Two beauty references we will never stop loving? Miami in the '80s and Scarface. Those were the inspirations backstage at Cushnie et Ochs' spring 2017 show, where the dresses were slit up-to-there and the lips took colourblocking to a whole new level. On the top lip, makeup artists swiped on a cherry-red matte lipstick (MAC in Perfect Score),while the bottom lip got a coat of Relentlessly Red (a confusing name for a matte, hot pink shade). Just one word of advice if you try this at home: don't smack your lips together. Otherwise, the colourblocking effect just becomes a colour.

In the days before matte lipsticks were rolling around in the bags of basically every woman everywhere, makeup artists had to improvise. They powdered, blotted, and then re-powdered creamy lipsticks to create that velvety finish. It was this backstage trick that makeup artist Mark Carrasquillo recalled when he created the look at Creatures of the Wind. Except this time, the powder itself was the statement. After applying (and yes, blotting down) Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl, Carrasquillo dipped a fluffy brush in Nars blush in Exhibit A and dusted it all over the lips. Sweep after sweep, the electric fuchsia brought a dimension of color and texture to the lipstick impossible to achieve on its own. And other than making one hell of a statement, there's also this: you can rest assured knowing this lip look will not budge.

Backstage at Chanel, makeup artists used a combination of the brand's Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in La Secrète and Rouge Allure Ink Matte Liquid Lip Colour in Séduisant, then topped it with the Chanel Gloss Volume Plumping Lipgloss.

GLOW FOR IT
image

The Best Makeup Trends For Spring 2017

Makeup artists, just like the rest of us, can't get enough of highlighted skin. The shinier and glowier the skin, the better (just check out the cheekbones at Elie Saab, left). But skin doesn't have to sparkle to shine. Though some shows went the more traditional highlighter route (Versace, Brandon Maxwell) others got there simply with intense skin prep and moisturizer. Because even on the runway models, after weeks and weeks of traveling, nothing glows quite like healthy skin.

The Best Makeup Trends For Spring 2017

There was a moment near the end of New York Fashion Week when we feared that no-makeup makeup was infecting yet another season. But by the last show in Paris, it was clear that color—purple, blue, yellow, and more—had made a triumphant return to backstage beauty. While there were plenty of shows that stripped models of all makeup, there were so many others, like Louis Vuitton (at left) that made color the focal point of the entire look. Whether it was as subtle as a pink pigment swept around the eye, or as dramatic as a stripe of yellow paint dashed across the cheekbones, colors of all shades were back for spring 2017.

Victoria Beckham's aesthetic is a lot of things, but carefree is not one of them. Yet her spring 2017 collection showed off a more relaxed Beckham woman — the dressers were looser, the pants a little baggier. And that's the direction the beauty look went as well; while the hair was polished and sleek, the makeup took a bolder approach. Makeup artists piled on emerald green and cobalt eyeshadow (from Beckham's collection with Estée Lauder), but they did so imperfectly. The shape was more painterly than graphic, which lent a fun and energetic vibe to the entire look.

The vibrant colors of Nina Ricci's Rio-inspired spring 2017 collection could also be found on the eyes of the models, where makeup artist Diane Kendal created multiple shades of glossy lids. Using grease paints in purple, orange, and blue, Kendal swept them on with a brush and then added a dab of Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream on top. The pigments mixed and swirled with the slick balm, resulting in shades that looked slightly different—but equally as captivating—on each model.

Pink makeup was a sleeper hit at fashion week, popping up at a few shows here or there without really making a splash. It wasn't until the Anna Sui show at the end of the week that the trend really found its footing. The look was all about a rebellious take on Americana. Makeup artist Pat McGrath translated that into a wash of rich burgundy color across the eyes, swept around both the top and bottom lids. A similar color was done in a glossy finish on the lips.
SMUDGED AND SMOKED

The Best Makeup Trends For Spring 2017

Eyeliner should be worn only one way in spring 2017: smudgy and imperfect. Makeup artists gravitated toward shades of black and gray (as we all do), but also experimented with navy and various shades of brown. But the color didn't matter as much as the application: either traced in the waterline (like at Francesco Scognamiglio, at left) randomly smudged across the lids, or both.

Backstage at Sonia Rykiel, makeup artist Lisa Eldridge used a navy eyeshadow shade from the Lancôme Saint-Germain palette (which was part of a capsule collection the beauty brand did with Rykiel) to create a smudgy eyeliner look. It was reminiscent of the eyes the late fashion designer preferred to wear.

The runway at 3.1 Phillip Lim was scattered with crushed flowers and dirt. It was meant to look like a dance had happened there the night before, a sort of Western-inspired high school prom. In beauty, that theme translated to sharp black eyeliner and a deconstructed, '60s- inspired low ponytail. Makeup artists traced a black liquid NARS eyeliner all around the eye, from the top to bottom lid. After filling in the waterlines with a kohl pencil, they used a Q-tip dipped in micellar water to wipe away the liner just at the edges of the eye. The effect was a sort of play on negative space, as if the girls had been dancing all night and their eyeliner just stayed put.

Makeup artist Sally Branka created the surfer girl beauty look at Thierry Mugler. After dabbing on concealer, Branka and her team brushed a powder bronzer all along the eyelids, along the lower lashline, and across both cheekbones and down the nose. A little blush was swirled on the cheeks. Then, a black kohl pencil was traced along both the top and bottom waterlines. Branka wanted it to feel like the Mugler surfer girl might have just gotten out of the water, drew on some black eyeliner, and went on her way. Before the models walked out, the makeup artists pressed the Clarins Blue Orchid face oil on the tops of the cheekbones and through the brows to give an unmistakable sheen (not shimmer) to the skin.

Carolina Herrera upped the ante by pairing her sooty black eyes with an equally bold lip. It was a one-two punch of serious makeup, and one of the first shows this season to send models down the runway wearing eye and lip color.

The glitter trend is here to stay, but it's evolving into a more artistic version of the trends we saw last year. At Fendi, for example, the models' lips were covered in a chunky pink glitter that was meant to evoke the look of a cartoon anime character. Then at other shows like Giamba and Maison Margiela, glitter was used in odd places like the eyebrows and forehead. It looks like we'll all still be shining for at least one more season.

There was a palpable frenzy in the air backstage at DKNY. To describe it accurately would be to say it was like your Instagram feed come to life: buzzy models like Bella Hadid and Jasmine Sanders slinking about in full-on glittery lips. If you follow Pat McGrath on Instagram, you've no doubt seen this look before (Her Lust 004 Lipstick Kit in Bloodwine was on display). But just because the look wasn't new didn't mean it wasn't perfect for the DKNY collection. For the show, McGrath created what she called a "crescendo of glitter." The first models on the runway only had a simple, dark lip. More and more glitter was added until the last few models walked in the Pat McGrath trademark sparkle. She left the skin fresh and natural; the eyes unadorned. When the models slipped into the collection's slinky dresses and popped up their hoods, the only visible beauty moment was the intense reflection of the lips. McGrath called it urban glamour; we call it Instagram bait.
