Looking Back On Harper's BAZAAR Singapore's Most Memorable Fashion Shoots Through The Years
JANUARY 2014: “We’d just arrived in Singapore from London and were suffering from horrible jet lag. Naomi had to do this cover shoot, walk at Digital Fashion Week, plus fly off to Melbourne that same night. But you’d never know from the images, because she looks fabulously “Naomi” as always! It’s this energy that still strikes me to this day, and what makes Naomi special.”—Alex Babsky, Makeup artist

SEPTEMBER 2011: “My dearest friend Cindy Crawford is like a sister to me. We’ve worked on numerous unforgettable projects together, one being the amazing concept of ‘Lady and the Vamp’ for this all-important September issue cover shoot. Cindy had to portray both sides of a woman, which was a breeze for her. It’s her beautiful soul that has made her a true icon in the industry. I love the story we did together very much!”— Peter Savic, Hairstylist

MARCH 2012: “I actually asked Cindy Crawford if she could help connect me with Christy Turlington, while I was having coffee with Cindy in Capri. George Clooney was seated beside us, which made it even more surreal. Three months later, Christy showed up on set for my cover shoot. I styled her in Tod’s, Tiffany & Co. and white plastic bangles I bought from a roadside stall in Udaipur. I also slit the silk dress up to her navel to get those supermodel legs in the shot!”—Kenneth Goh, Editor-in-Chief of Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore

SEPTEMBER 2013: “We shot on the same day that David Beckham announced his retirement from football, so the hotel lobby was covered with paparazzi. Nonetheless, Victoria turned up like a pro, and worked like a fiend in front of legendary Ellen von Unwerth’s lens. Watching her pose like a boss in underwear surrounded by million dollars’ worth of Cartier, while on the phone with her husband, made me realise few women can pull off sexiness and success the way Victoria Beckham can.”—Windy Aulia, Senior Fashion Editor of Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore

JUNE 2015: “Being recognised as a Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore cover girl was an honour, as it represents glamour, class and sophistication. I enjoyed being surrounded by the creative energy from the team, who made me feel like a part of the wonderful BAZAAR world. My time in Singapore made me realise that the country is a melting pot of different cultures, and I love how it has maintained its traditions after all this time.”—Chiara Ferragni, Digital Influencer

JANUARY 2007: “Ten years on, the Janet Jackson cover remains a career highlight. Kenneth and I pulled the shoot together at the very last minute, making it a true passion project. I interviewed Janet in a blacked-out limo in Japan, where she said it was the most personal interview she’d given yet.”—Natasha Kraal, editor-in-Chief of Harper’s BAZAAR Malaysia

JUNE 2011: “Shooting Sun Fei Fei along Shanghai’s Bund still feels like a dream. I admire Fei Fei who, despite feeling under the weather, still powered through the shoot despite the harsh spring winds, dressed in ultra-delicate layers of haute couture Chanel. Thank goodness for the hotel’s thick duvet to cover up between shots!”—Joyce Cheo, Senior Beauty Writer of Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore

FEBRUARY 2011: “The team and I had lots of fun doing this shoot in an old school hair salon located under a block of HDB flats. This salon, a relic from the ’80s, captured the essence of Singapore in that period. For the shoot, I thought it would be interesting to create a hairstyle for the models inspired by ‘aunties’ from the same period, whom I feel are true icons of Singapore.”—Marc Teng, Hairstylist

APRIL 2010: “I was standing right behind Kenneth when Simon Upton captured this moment. Milla Jovovich was so effortless and intentional at the same time, aware of every aspect of the look from what she wore to how she posed. In one shot, she chose to hold the waiter’s notebook and pen with a Cara Croninger cuff, and it gave me chills when I realised that instead of taking orders, she was giving them.”—Rebecca Alexis, Contributing Stylist

OCTOBER 2015: “My first experience with a spread shot across Singapore was in 2008 as an intern. This image of ninja-like models at Marina Barrage made me realise how much the area has evolved since then, when cranes and construction sites formed the backdrop. Coordinating the logistics of 32 brands to dress seven models over three days seemed like an impossible task, but the results made it all worth it.”—Debby Kwong, Fashion Stylist of Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore

AUGUST 2008: “This was Burberry at Tanah Merah station—the first shot on the last day of our epic four-day extravaganza, and we had closed down two passenger cars for this. The silence from curious Bystanders was broken only by the sounds of the camera shutter and verbal directions from Kenneth and Georges Antoni. The mood was electric and I had goosebumps as I’d never seen such glamour on the MRT before! Eight years have passed, and I still try to replicate this shot on my daily morning commute. Unfortunately, I never quite manage to look this chic.”— Adriel Chiun, Contributing Writer

MARCH 2009: “This was a tough image to create. Firstly, let’s spare a thought for the twins who had to carry the girls with no assistance, and had to stay super still as it was bordering on nighttime. To add insult to injury, the water was freezing cold and the wind felt like it was the start of Hurricane Katrina. As they say, nothing good comes easy. This is a case in point.”—Georges Antoni, Photographer

MARCH 2010: “Cockatoo Island was chosen as the location for its rustic charm. Kenneth and I wanted to create a juxtaposition between the Old and New Worlds. Having worked with the models previously, I knew they could portray the fun and fantastic world of animated actors from silent films in the ’20s. The makeup and hair team, the natural lighting and the chemistry was pure magic—essential ingredients to make what was to become truly reflective of fashion in the Millennium.”—Simon Upton, Photographer

DECEMBER 2015: “I wanted to contrast the old European feel of Paris with a modern Asian statement. Park Soo Joo, with her distinctly Asian features and edgy blonde hair, is the perfect representation of a modern woman of our times. This haute couture brocade coat dress from Ulyana Sergeenko complemented the French antique chair beautifully, much like the indescribable synergy between Kenneth’s vision and my creativity. I hope that with this image, people will see beyond its beauty and recognise that the team behind it are all part of an Asian force.”—Yu Tsai, Photographer

JUNE 2016: “Being a cover girl for Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore meant embodying the iconic BAZAAR woman I grew up idolising. Kenneth, Yu Tsai and I had just spent two days filming Asia’s Next Top Model together, so by the time we went on set to shoot our cover story, it felt like old friends having fun. This cover is still a surreal milestone in my career.”—Nicole Warne, Digital Influencer
