14 TV Shows To Watch After Streaming Stranger Things Season 3

These shows will ease your pain after you binge the latest season

July 31, 2019

Stranger Things 3 hit Netflix on Independence Day, giving viewers ample opportunity to binge-watch the show in its entirety in a matter of hours. If you already devoured every second of Season 3, from Billy Montgomery’s thirst trap to whatever the hell happened to Hopper, then you’re probably ready for some new TV shows. While there’s nothing quite like Stranger Things, here, we take a look at some shows that are worthy of your time while you wait for Season 4.

14 TV Shows To Watch After Streaming Stranger Things Season 3
Veronica Mars

If you can’t get enough of the drama in Hawkins, then you’re going to love Veronica Mars. Set in Neptune, a wealthy seaside town, the series follows Kristen Bell’s titular character, a private investigator intent on solving the town’s biggest mysteries. Catch up on the first three seasons and follow-up movie so that you can binge Hulu’s upcoming reboot.

The OA

Brit Marling stars as a blind woman named Prairie who returns home after mysteriously disappearing seven years earlier. Season 1 is a taut thriller; think Silence of the Lambs peppered with sci-fi element. Season 2 goes all in on The OA’s science-fiction premise—prepare for a complicated multi-verse and multiple timelines.

The Rook

A young woman awakens on London’s Millenium Bridge surrounded by corpses—with no memory of her past. Thus begins The Rook, based on the book by Daniel O’Malley, which follows Myfanwy Thomas (Emma Greenwell) as she ascertains her involvement in a shadowy government organization.

Altered Carbon

Based on the book by Richard K. Morgan, Netflix’s Altered Carbon takes place over 350 years in the future. People’s memories can be downloaded and placed into any “sleeve”—either a synthetic or human body. In Season 1, Joel Kinnaman plays Takeshi Kovacs, whose epic journey is part murder mystery, part love story, and always jaw-dropping in its visual ambition. Season 2 is due to return to Netflix with Anthony Mackie joining the cast.

Dark
image

Just like Stranger Things, Netflix’s German science-fiction thriller starts out with a missing child. But what transpires in the murky town of Winden spans three generations and multiple timelines. Season 2 just hit Netflix, and the series has been greenlit for a third and final season.

Black Mirror

Science-fiction anthology series Black Mirror started out on British TV but was quickly snapped up by Netflix. Each standalone episode explores what the world might look like in the not-too-distant future, especially if humans aren’t careful with the technologies they create. Miley Cyrus stars in the show’s most recent episode as pop star Ashley O.

UnREAL
image

A fictionalized account of what life is like behind the scenes of The Bachelor, UnREAL examines reality television through a searing feminist lens for four incredible seasons. With the friendship between showrunner Quinn (Constance Zimmer) and fledgling producer Rachel (Shiri Appleby) at its core, UnREAL is the perfect antidote if you miss the fierce friendships in Stranger Things. And you won’t be prepared for just how dark and twisty it gets.

The Sinner

Jessica Biel plays a young woman who commits a violent crime out of the blue and has no idea why she did it. Bill Pullman’s detective Harry Ambrose is this show’s Hopper; he works the case, gradually uncovering a truth that is impossible to predict. Pullman’s aloof cop takes on an even bigger role in Season 2, and he’ll play opposite Matt Bomer in the already-announced Season 3.

Slasher
image

If you secretly watch Stranger Things for the (low-level) scares, then you should definitely watch Slasher. The horror anthology series recently returned to Netflix for a third season—ominously subtitled The Druid—and its previous installments each feature a different serial killer and a whole lot of victims. Is it cheesy? Sure. But only in the same way that all classic ’80s-and ’90s-style horror should be.

Ozark
image

Netflix has really gone all in on its thrillers, and here’s the proof. Jason Bateman and Laura Linney relocate to the Missouri Ozarks, where they’re forced to launder $500 million for a pretty terrifying drug lord. Understandably, the locals don’t take kindly to, or trust, their new neighbors. Chaos ensues. Think Breaking Bad but with a constant blue filter à la Steven Soderbergh.

Riverdale
image

If you love Stranger Things for its fledgling teen drama, then you’re probably a fan of Riverdale too. From the complicated love lives of Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica to the sources of evil constantly threatening their small town, Riverdale is the perfect stopgap for anyone dealing with a Stranger Things 3 withdrawal.

You
image

You features Penn Badgley’s epic return to TV following his unforgettable arc as Dan Humphrey on Gossip Girl. Badgley stars as bookstore manager Joe Goldberg, with Season 1 charting his relationship with enigmatic writer Beck. However, there’s more to Joe than meets the eye, and much of it is locked in the bookstore’s basement. Dropped by Lifetime, Season 2 of You is set to hit Netflix instead.

Westworld
image

HBO’s Westworld, which is based on Michael Crichton’s movie of the same name, takes place in the future in a Wild West-themed amusement park. Wealthy guests can enact their fantasies within the park without facing any real-life consequences. Season 3 is currently in the works and Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul joins the cast.

The Path
image

For three perfect seasons, viewers were immersed in Meyerism on The Path. Believers prayed to “the Light” as they ascended “the Ladder,” the ultimate goal being to end up in “the Garden,” the religion’s own version of heaven. The show’s enviable cast includes Aaron Paul, Michelle Monaghan, and Hugh Dancy. Despite being canceled far too soon, The Path is still perfect for any Stranger Things fans in need of another mystery to solve.
