Chanel’s Quilted Bag Is Reborn As A New Mini Treasure

Chanel’s quilted flap bag has been an icon for more than half a century since Gabrielle Chanel hit on that perfect blend of practicality and understated chic. While it may be a staple in many a fashionista’s closet, this latest version has never been seen before: Virginie Viard has whimsically and ingeniously turned the House’s most famous symbol into an equally covetable piece of jewellery—a demonstration that it’s often the littlest details that make the biggest impact. Viard’s spring/summer 2021 collection for the House was filled with more of the same charming play on proportion: Other bags were shrunken and slung on belts and necklaces while the brand’s name was blown up huge and spelt out like neon lights on t-shirts; big tweed jackets were paired with little satin shorts; dresses that were short in front ended with trains at the back. Two years into the job, Viard has fine-tuned her winning formula of ease and elegance for the House, and now, with her bag-as-jewellery trick, the designer has also proved that she has a deft hand at mixing chic with cheek.

The cuff is $3,850 and is available at Chanel, #01-25/26/27 Ngee Ann City (tel: 6645 1900).
