Whether it’s a jade bangle passed down through generations or a diamond ring worn daily, jewellery isn’t just decorative. It holds memory, emotion, and meaning. The same can be said for timepieces, which often mark milestones in quieter ways: a gift, a graduation, or a reward to the self. These are objects that live close to the body and grow more personal over time.

And like anything built to last, they deserve care that’s both informed and intentional. Here, we have come up with a jewellery cleaning guide, with tips and insights from BAZAAR editors, as well as from Choo Yilin, founder of Choo Yilin Artisan Jewellery, to help you keep those precious pieces looking dazzling for weeks, months and years to come.

The Gentle Art of Cleaning at Home

We’re firm believers that jewellery should be worn rather than babied, but pieces in regular rotation inevitably pick up traces of everyday life—hand cream, sunscreen, soap and even the natural oils from your skin. Rather than waiting until a ring or pair of earrings has visibly lost its sparkle, we prefer giving them a gentle once-over every so often.

Think of it as maintenance rather than a full restoration job. A soft brush and a light wipe down are usually more than enough for sturdy pieces. Most importantly, resist the temptation to scrub until everything looks brand new. Jewellery is delicate at a microscopic level, and over-cleaning can sometimes create more problems than it solves.

“For diamond-set pieces, always treat the setting with as much reverence as the stone itself. A soft brush can dislodge dirt around the prongs, but never scrub aggressively. Wedding rings, which gather soap residue, lotion, and daily dust, benefit from a quick rinse and gentle brush every week,” says Choo.

She continues: “The paradox is that too much cleaning can be just as harmful as too little. Over-scrubbing weakens prongs, loosens settings, and dulls surface finishes. With jade, excessive wiping or chemical exposure can strip away the polish that gives it life. The guiding principle is moderation: regular light care at home, and professional maintenance every so often.”

Heavy-duty Cleaners for Sturdy Pieces

Ultrasonic cleaners are undeniably satisfying—there’s something addictive about watching dirt disappear from all those tiny crevices. But they should not be treated as a universal solution. Before putting anything into a machine, you need to know exactly what the stone is, whether it has been treated and how secure its setting is.

A simple gold chain or a robust diamond piece may be perfectly suited to more intensive cleaning, while an antique jewel or a porous gemstone is another story entirely. When in doubt, it’s better to have the piece professionally assessed rather than risk damaging something irreplaceable.

“Ultrasonic machines can be a godsend for sturdy gold or platinum pieces with few or no diamonds, but they may be unsuitable for many coloured gemstones. In fact, any organic or porous stone, like jade, pearl, coral, or turquoise, should never go into an ultrasonic bath. These require only the gentlest hand-cleaning. Jade is treasured precisely because of its subtle translucency and inner life—qualities that ultrasonic vibrations can compromise,” says Choo.

Simpler Solutions Are Safer

You’ve probably come across viral jewellery cleaning hacks on your FYP. But while toothpaste, vinegar, baking soda and household cleaners may make for satisfying before-and-after videos, precious metals and gemstones aren’t kitchenware.

Our tip for cleaning jewellery at home is deliberately mundane: lukewarm water, a little mild dish soap and a very soft brush or cloth. If that isn’t enough to revive a piece, take it as a sign that it probably needs professional attention. With jewellery—particularly jade, pearls and other more sensitive materials—the safest cleaning routine is usually the least convoluted.

“The rule for using at-home cleaning solutions is simple—the simpler, the safer. Avoid bleach, vinegar, baking soda, alcohol, or anything abrasive. These can strip metals, scratch surfaces, and permanently alter stones like jade. Jade should never meet harsh acids or alkalis; plain water and mild soap are all it asks for,” says Choo.

How to Store with Grace

If you thought a jewellery box was mostly about organisation; think again. Pieces that look beautiful piled together on a tray can quietly scratch, chip or tangle while you’re not looking.

Every jewel needs a little breathing room: rings apart from necklaces, harder stones away from softer ones, and anything particularly precious in its own compartment or pouch. A pro tip for chains: fasten them before putting them away and keep them stretched out whenever possible. It takes an extra few seconds, but it saves a lot of frustration later.

“Suede or fabric-lined interiors offer a gentle cushion, protecting jade bangles, diamond earrings, or gold chains from scratches. Anti-tarnish boxes add another layer of care, particularly useful for silver pieces or mixed-metal settings,” says Choo.

She adds: “Organising pieces by type or by material works, but what matters most is separation. One storage mistake we see often is stacking. Many clients place jade bangles side by side or layer diamond pieces in a single tray. It may look elegant, but over time, this contact causes scratches, chips, and loosening of settings.”

How to Travel in Style

Before a trip, edit your jewellery selection almost like you would a holiday wardrobe: a few versatile pieces that work across several looks rather than bringing half the jewellery box “just in case”.

Try to pack each piece in its own compartment, particularly necklaces, earrings with delicate posts and anything with a raised setting. Another pro tip: keep valuable jewellery in your hand luggage at all times. Apart from the security aspect, it also means you’re in control of how the pieces are handled. And perhaps most importantly, packing thoughtfully prevents the very unglamorous experience of arriving at your hotel and spending half an hour unravelling a knot of chains.

“Travel can be especially hard on heirlooms. Padded cases with individual compartments prevent jade bangles and other jewellery from shifting and colliding. Soft interiors in suede or velvet prevent surface scratches, while zippered or roll formats keep everything contained. For those who travel frequently, carry your most treasured pieces as hand luggage only—never checked in—to ensure they remain close and secure,” says Choo.

What Humidity Does and How to Control It

Singapore’s climate is wonderful for many things, but the humidity means that closed drawers and poorly ventilated wardrobes can become surprisingly damp.

You don’t have to turn your home into a museum-grade vault, but you should keep storage areas clean, dry and reasonably ventilated. Periodically open drawers and cases that aren’t accessed often rather than leaving them closed for months. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s simply preventing moisture from quietly building up around pieces you may not wear every week.

“Ideally, a storage environment is kept at cool temperatures around 18 to 22°C, with humidity between 40 to 50 percent. Too much heat or dampness stresses metals, settings, and leathers. Too much dryness risks cracking organic materials,” says Choo.

She continues: “The simplest humidity-control step is air circulation. Even opening your jewellery drawer regularly helps prevent stagnant dampness. Pair that with silica gel packets or anti-tarnish strips, and you’ve already given your jade, diamonds, and gold a healthier environment.”

Protecting Jewellery from Daily Wear

Most jewellery damage isn’t caused by one dramatic accident—it comes from hundreds of tiny knocks, chemical exposures and moments of friction over time. Apply your skincare, fragrance and hair products before putting anything precious on, especially rings, watches and jewellery that sit directly against the skin. Try to take your pieces off before the gym, a swim or anything involving cleaning products.

“Perfumes, lotions, sunscreens, and even hairspray can leave residue that corrodes metals and clouds gemstones. For jade, these chemicals may dull the lustre over time. We recommend allowing creams and perfumes to fully dry before putting on any jewellery,” says Choo.

She adds: “We always recommend against wearing jewellery while exercising or swimming. Chlorine, sweat, and saltwater all accelerate tarnish and can weaken settings. Even jade and diamonds, while hardy, can be chipped if knocked against gym equipment or pool tiles.”

When Should You Leave It to a Professional?

There are certain things that are best left to the professionals. If a stone begins to move, a claw catches on clothing, a clasp suddenly feels loose, or a piece looks noticeably different from when it was bought, it’s best to stop wearing it until someone can take a proper look.

This is especially important for rings, which take far more knocks than you realise, and for older or inherited jewellery where settings may already have decades of wear behind them. Annual check-ups are also worthwhile for the pieces you wear constantly. A jeweller spotting a worn prong early is infinitely preferable to discovering the problem when the stone pops out and lost forever.

“We recommend a professional inspection for jewellery once a year, as they catch issues invisible to the eye, like micro-cracks. Signs of everyday wear include loosened prongs or settings. Any rattle, dulling, or visible shift deserves immediate attention. Ignoring these signs risks turning minor wear into irreversible loss,” says Choo.
