Kate Middleton Borrowed The Queen's Jewellery For Her First Solo Trip

The Duchess of Cambridge had clearly planned ahead before visiting the Mauritshuis art museum in the Netherlands on Tuesday.

The Duchess was welcomed to The Hague on Tuesday.

With the knowledge that her private tour of the gallery would involve a viewing of Johannes Vermeer's famous 'Girl With A Pearl Earring,' Kate, who is an art history graduate, chose to accessorize her Catherine Walker suit with a pair of pearl earrings borrowed from the Queen, the Telegraph reports.

Kate was shown works by the Dutch masters and paintings from the Queen's Royal Collection by the museum's director, Emilie Gordenker, who also thought pearl earrings would be a sensible jewellery choice for the occasion.

"She didn't mention the earrings she was wearing, but she was interested in the painting," Gordenker explained. "She asked if it had become a lot more popular since the film came out, and I said it definitely had."

Kate's day trip to The Hague and Rotterdam was a milestone in her history of royal engagements, as it was the first time she had made a visit abroad without the Duke of Cambridge by her side.

Earlier in the day, Kate enjoyed a lunch with King Willem-Alexander at the Dutch royal family's residence Villa Eikenhorst. Her visit finished with an arts and crafts session in Rotterdam, where she met with members of a community workshop that provides facilities for teenagers in an economically deprived district.
