Radiant, timeless and nearly indestructible, diamonds are not just beautiful gems worthy of admiration, they are also an eternal symbol of commitment and love. Louis Vuitton honours this belief with the debut of a new fine jewellery collection— the LV Diamonds.

This collection, launched in January, sees an array of rings, earrings and pendants in white gold, pink gold and platinum, adorned with brilliant-cut and LV Monogram Star-cut diamonds, which were previously only used in the Maison’s high jewellery.

“Launching the LV Diamonds fine jewellery collection is a way to pay tribute to this legendary cut and showcase our unique diamond expertise at Louis Vuitton,” said Francesca Amfitheatrof, artistic director for watches and jewellery.

This revolutionary cut of diamonds with 53 facets is inspired by Louis Vuitton’s monogram flower and sports an intensely brilliant sparkle. But don’t let the glitz fool you; it took the Maison’s finest jewellers two years to perfect the technique.

For starters, only two to three percent of rough diamonds are selected due to the superb clarity and perfect four-way symmetry that define the graphic nature of this particular cut.

Cutting the gems is also far more complex. While typical brilliant diamonds can be achieved using machines, the LV Monogram Star diamonds need to be done manually.

“It takes 40 percent more time to cut an LV Monogram Star cut. However, at Louis Vuitton, we managed to gather some talented polishers called ‘Groovers’—a declining métier that’s being reborn, thanks to our cut—that have mastered this ability,” said Amfitheatrof.

Each diamond is unique, so for the first time, an LV Diamonds certificate comes with each purchase. It details the stone’s weight, colour, purity, and origins from the mine it was extracted to the workshop where it was cut, polished and mounted.

Diamonds aside, Amfitheatrof has crafted the Maison’s storied heritage into several pieces of the collection. The V rings rekindled the Art Deco-style V that Gaston-Louis Vuitton used to decorate his suitcases in the 1920s and ’30s. The Damier rings, as their name suggests, hark back to the Damier canvas created by Georges Vuitton in 1888.

Amfitheatrof also designed this collection to be gender-neutral—a quality that she believes is intrinsic to the spirit of Louis Vuitton. “I always want to create and offer pieces that are both for men and for the LV Diamonds, inspired by Louis Vuitton’s monogram flower, sport an intensely brilliant sparkle, all thanks to the revolutionary LV Monogram cut of 53 facets on the stones women. I don’t think it needs to be so distinguished today as much as it used to be in the past,” said Amfitheatrof.

She added: “Men tend to buy white gold jewellery and tend to wear white gold jewellery with a little bit of diamonds; it is nice and elegant, and men are very comfortable with it.”

This design approach culminates in a versatile collection with pieces that can be worn individually or together as a stack or even mixed and matched to express one’s personal style—something Amfitheatrof is familiar with.

“In my daily life, I enjoy wearing the LV Diamonds studs, they are timeless yet modern and bold. I also love the contemporary lines of our V-shaped diamond bands and to create my own combinations.”
