Would Rolex surprise with a brighter, more graphic dial this year? It did. The new Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36 with a multi-coloured, Jubilee-motif dial feel slightly reminiscent of the Celebration and Puzzle models of previous years. In a subtle, yet eye-catching way, the dial revisits the Jubilee motif that was introduced by the brand at the end of the 1970s. This time the letters of the Rolex name are repeated and interplayed in ten colours with the execution of this effect presenting a technical challenge and careful precision. On a sleek Oyster bracelet, the lively dial is allowed to shine to full effect.

Audemars Piguet’s new Atelier des Établisseurs is the brand’s love letter to old-world watchmaking, bringing together artisans to craft extraordinary timepieces using rare techniques such as stone-cutting, enamelling, and gem-setting, along with its top-notch movements, to create timepieces that are truly singular. The Établisseurs Galets, featuring turquoise and tiger’s eye, are hand-cut in freeform shapes resembling pebbles, and the pieces are then connected to form a bracelet watch. The movement of the Galets is actually a combination of two separate movements from the brand’s repertoire that have been bent and shaped to match the fluid case shape.

Hublot turns fragmentation into spectacle with the Spirit of Big Bang Impact, which pushes the Maison’s material experimentation even further. The 42mm, all-black ceramic tonneau watch is the stealth standout of this collection. The limited edition watch features polished and microblasted black ceramic with the shattered, fragmented motif for a look that is equal parts mysterious and sharp. The skeletonised moonphase calibre underneath showcases how the brand can merge complications easily with bold aesthetics.

Proving once again that the House that Coco built can do sporty chic as well as the boys do, is Chanel’s re-edition of the 2005 J12 Superleggera. An emblem of sporty and sleek design, this new 42mm edition comes in matte black ceramic and steel with a lacquered black dial, as well as updated touches including a ring around the bezel made of satin-finished hardened steel on the top and blackened steel at the base, and the date indicated by a red arrow at the 4’o clock position.

Touches of red in the form of the words “Superleggero” on the dial and on the minute markers create bold accents. Like a smidge of red lipstick on an otherwise bare face, the effect is daring and precise.

While dainty watches are all the rage right now, there is still much to love with the sports models, especially Chopard’s newest Alpine Eagle timepiece. Of course, the alluring champagne dial, dubbed ‘Mountain Glow’, is a perfect neutral shade to complement casual and formal looks, but the thinness of the case, measuring in at 8mm, and the redesigned bracelet, featuring a new comfort adjustment system that allows the wearer to extend it to make up for temperature changes or wrist movement, truly makes this watch a standout.

Jaeger-LeCoultre is renowned for both its high watchmaking as well as its high artistry. This year sees the launch of a new series of capsule collections dubbed La Vallée des Merveilles—celebrating the natural beauty of nature’s wonders, truly cementing Jaeger-LeCoultre’s creative excellence.

One of the standouts from the collection for us was the Reverso One ‘Sakura’ edition that celebrates distinctly Japanese symbols such as the crane and cherry blossom in an exquisite miniature scene that uses Grand Feu champlevé enamelling, delicate brushwork, and snow set diamonds (on the crane’s body) and a blend of multi-hued, snow-set sapphires and diamonds to create the effect of sparkling water. The result in a timepiece of breathtaking beauty.

Patek Philippe introduced an automaton wristwatch based off a pocket watch from 1958 from the brand’s extensive archives. Dubbed “The Crow and The Fox” after the children’s fable by by Jean de la Fontaine, this glorious piece provides the hours and the minutes on demand and is perhaps the perfect apotheosis of Patek Philippe’s prowess in both complications and its Rare Handcrafts artistry.

Its both playful—the retrograde hours and minutes are supplied on demand according to a sequence where the fox indicates the hour with either its paw or muzzle, while the minutes are indicated by a minute hand (decorated with the cheese that is central to this tale) to drop from the crow’s beak. Clever, and whimsical, this represents time-telling at its most poetic and craftsmanship of the highest order.

Highly-impressive in person in both its poetic beauty and technical accomplishment is this new timepiece from Van Cleef & Arpels. From its Poetic Complications collection, Van Cleef & Arpels is one Maison that never loses sight of the brief—complications should always be in service of the design.

The new Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune 42mm watch features two overlapping complications. The first animates the eponymous Jour/Nuit (Night & Day) display, while the second is an “astronomical” complication that illustrates the current Moon phase. The animation, impressive in its smooth trajectory, can be activated on demand with a pusher function. On a sparkling black Murano Aventurine glass dial and with a contrasting white gold case, this is truly a glittering lunarscape to behold.
