Angelina Jolie, mother of one of Hollywood’s most well-known families, was once a 20-something who had zero interest in kids. “It’s strange, I never wanted to have a baby,” she told reporters in Cambodia. “I never wanted to be pregnant. I never babysat. I never thought of myself as a mother.”
Going to Cambodia to shoot Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2000, however, changed her. “I realized there was so much about history that I had not been taught in school, and so much about life that I needed to understand, and I was very humbled by it,” she said. She contacted the United Nations and went back on a trip back to the country with them.
She was playing with school children when she was hit with the revelation: “It was suddenly very clear to me that my son was in the country, somewhere.” She adopted him, her eldest son Maddox, in 2002. And the rest—five more kids and Brad Pitt—is history.
