This time last year, the world watched a nervous Prince George tightly holding his father’s hand as he made his way to his first day of school.
With the then-pregnant Duchess of Cambridge at home due to extreme morning sickness, Prince William and his eldest son waved for the cameras as they entered the school gates before posing for the tot’s official first day photograph.
On Thursday, the five-year-old will return to Thomas’s Academy in Battersea for his first day of Year 1, but photographers and journalists have not been invited to report of this week’s historic event.

Well, HELLO!‘s royal correspondent Emily Nash explains: “Prince George’s time at school is private and although the Duke and Duchess shared an image from his first day at primary school last year, they won’t do it every year.”
Royal tradition appears to dictate that children are pictured on their very first day of school, but aren’t photographed in following years.
This would explain why we’ve only seen a handful of portraits on George on his first at Westacre Montessori in January 2016, and of Princess Charlotte attending her first day at Willcocks Nursery School in Kensington earlier this year.
Historically, there are only a couple of snaps of Prince William and Prince Harry on their first days of a new school.

The Express reports Prince George will return for the autumn school term on 6 September and will be expected to start ballet lessons this year.
The Duchess of Cambridge is expected to drop off her son as she and husband Prince William regularly participate in the school run.
Meanwhile, Princess Charlotte will return to school on Wednesday 5 September, according to the nursery’s term dates.

The three-year-old celebrated her first day at nursery in January, with Kensington Palace releasing a set of images of the student dressed in a red duffel coat and pink scarf on the steps of the school.
George and Charlotte are expected to make their next public appearance on Friday 12 October, when they attend Princess Eugenie’s wedding in Windsor. It is yet to be confirmed whether the royals will act as a pageboy and bridesmaid, as they did for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s big day in May.
