Apparently, Hailey Bieber Wasn't Shading Selena Gomez On Instagram

She cleared the air in now-deleted comments

[Updated 23/10]

- Hailey Bieber (née Baldwin) clarified that she wasn't "responding" to Selena Gomez's new single, "Lose You to Love Me," in comments she wrote and later deleted on Instagram.

- Hailey posted a seemingly shady Instagram Story soon after the release of Gomez's new song, which is highly speculated to be about ex-beau and Hailey's newly anointed husband, Justin Bieber.

Hailey Bieber wants to set the record straight: She was not shading Selena Gomez for seemingly writing a song about her new husband.

Gomez recently released "Lose You to Love Me," a heart-wrenching ballad about building self-love after the end of a relationship, with some seemingly pointed lyrics toward Justin Bieber and his marriage to Hailey.

After Gomez dropped 2019's new breakup anthem, Hailey posted an Instagram Story of a song she was listening to, "I'll Kill You" by Summer Walker, which suspiciously appeared to direct a threat toward Gomez.

The song, which includes heartening lyrics like "You don't want no problems, I wish a bitch would / Tryna come between us, it won't end up good / You know I love you like no one else could," expresses a fatalistic devotion to a romantic partner, where the singer promises she'd "go to Hell and jail" for her man. Cue all the wide-eyed emoji!

But, apparently, Hailey wasn't aiming for Gomez after all. After JustJared posted about the ordeal to Instagram, Hailey made now-deleted comments that read, "Please stop with this nonsense ... there is no 'response'. This is complete BS."

Disaster averted?

Hailey Bieber (née Baldwin) made an interesting move when a lot of eyes were on her account to see if she had any spicy reaction to her husband Justin Bieber's ex Selena Gomez's new song, "Lose You to Love Me" right after it came out. Hailey posted an Instagram Story of the song she was listening to at the time: Summer Walker's "I'll Kill You."

Walker's song is more or less a lyrical warning to other women not to come between her and her partner. The lyrics include "Don't want no problems, I wish a bitch would / Try to come between us, it won't end up good / You know I love you like no one else could / I'd go to Hell and back for ya."

So, yes, it was easy for Selena Gomez fans to take that as a message to Gomez to back off Justin, especially given Gomez's new single is a breakup song that seems partly inspired by her relationship with him.

The most telling, Hailey-centric lyric on Gomez's single is when Gomez seems to call Justin out for moving on with Hailey (dating, getting engaged to, and marrying the model) so quickly after their own relationship ended. Gomez and Justin's break became a breakup in March/April 2018; he started dating Hailey in June and got engaged to her in July. Justin and Hailey got married in September 2018.

Gomez sings, "I gave my all and they all know it / You turned me down, and now it's showing / In two months you replaced us / Like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it / And to think of healing, yeah."

But Gomez also isn't threatening Hailey and Justin's relationship directly or indirectly on the track. Gomez didn't put out a torch song; she ends "Lose You to Love Me"—which by its title alone suggests the relationship she is singing about needed to end because it was toxic to her—with a goodbye. "I needed to lose you to love me / And now it's goodbye, it's goodbye for us," Gomez sings.

Hailey hasn't responded to the Gomez fan backlash. Justin, by the way, just posted a photo of an animal shortly after Gomez's song came out. Nothing explosive there.
