Ariana Grande And Cynthia Erivo To Star In Jon M. Chu's Adaption Of Wicked

Ariana Grande just landed her biggest acting role yet.

The pop star is set to star alongside Tony, Grammy, and Emmy winner Cynthia Erivo in Universal’s upcoming live-action adaption of the mega-hit musical Wicked, according to Variety. The film will be directed by Jon M. Chu (In the HeightsCrazy Rich Asians), who has been attached to the project since February. Grande will star as Glinda, the Good Witch, and Erivo as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, taking over the roles made famous by the Broadway musical’s original stars, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. The beloved musical is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, telling the story of the world of Oz before Dorothy’s arrival.

Both Grande and Erivo shared the casting news on social media, congratulating each other and revealing their first reactions to hearing that they had indeed received the film’s starring parts.

“Thank goodness 💘 @jonmchu @cynthiaerivo @wickedmovie,” Grande captioned her Instagram post. Grande’s note from Erivo read, “Pink goes good with green. Congratulations Miss A, the part was made for you. I look forward to sharing this musical journey with you. Love, Cynthia.”

Erivo’s note from Grande, meanwhile, read, “Dear Cynthia, honoured doesn’t even begin to cover it. I cannot wait to hug you. See you in Oz. All my love, Ari.”

Stephen Schwartz, who composed the music for the Broadway show, is adapting the screenplay alongside Winnie Holzman, with Marc Platt set to produce.
