Kim Kardashian‘s return to social media was always going to be headline news. After taking a hiatus for over three months after a terrifying ordeal where she was robbed at gunpoint during Paris Fashion Week, the reality-television star made her grand return last week with a photo of herself, her husband Kanye and their two children entitled “Family”.
The photo – like the nine that have been shared since – is a grainy image that shows the family dressed in simple, casual attire in a house that looks very different to where you might imagine the wealthy family resides.
Following the burglary, after which she was criticised by the media for carelessly flaunting her wealth on social media, it’s not surprising that Kardashian has opted to post photos that are a little less flashy. However, certain fans think she has gone a little too far in the other direction, with some now chastising her for pretending to be “poor”.
“Why are they trying so hard to look poor in these pictures,” one follower commented. “I have an idea, let’s take some pictures that aesthetically make us look poor,” another joked. “What is this house they are in? Trying to fool people they are living the poor life now,” one said. “What are those stains on the wall though?”

If you compare these images to the kind of photos Kardashian used to upload, you can see that they may well have a point. She certainly has a new look, but has she taken it too far?
Despite these negative comments, it’s no bad thing that Kardashian is making less of a show of her wealth on Instagram, especially after the harrowing experience she went through in Paris. And while not everyone is onboard with her new aesthetic, a lot of people definitely are; she has never been more popular on the social-media platform. Kardashian received more than four million likes for one of her new images, almost double what she received on her previously most liked photo.
While she’ll undoubtedly always cause controversy – she is the internet’s Marmite – there’s no stopping her. We’ll just have to wait and see what she does next…
