Manolo Blahnik has said that the comparisons between Meghan Markle and Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor are "ridiculous". Blahnik – whose designs have been worn by the future duchess – argued that the only similarities between the two women are that they are American and that they have both been divorced.

"[It's] ridiculous," he told The Times. "There’s no comparison. Maybe she’s an American. Maybe she’s a divorcee."

Blahnik said that although both women do have similar experiences (presumably in marriage), they cannot be compared to one another, before adding that he was happy for Harry: “[It's] wonderful for the child! For Prince Harry.”

In the interview, the designer also commented on the news of Riccardo Tisci's appointment at Burberry, which he believes to be an "offensive" choice because he is not British.

"I think it’s offensive," he said. "Why didn’t they go to Saint Martins? Thousands of children. Talented. Talented. But they want names. Or why don’t they choose English people who want to be in England, like the Céline girl, she’s divine: Phoebe [Philo]. I don’t know if he is a good or bad choice, but it’s not relevant. It’s not England."

Blahnik – who is known for his sometimes outspoken opinions – also went on to discuss how he has attempted to adjust his behaviour in the wake of the #MeToo movement, even carrying around a list of things he shouldn't say because they might cause offence.

"I don’t even know what I can say now," he said. "The other day, I have on my table a list of things I cannot say to people. I cannot say, ‘How wonderful you look.’ I cannot… pay compliments… because maybe it can be called sexual harassment."
