Olivia Wilde Says Florence Pugh "Deserves More Than" Baseless Rumors About Don't Worry Darling

Olivia Wilde is setting the record straight about the rumored feud between her and Florence Pugh.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, she condemned the media frenzy over alleged tension between her and Pugh, who stars in Wilde’s forthcoming sophomore directorial project, Don’t Worry Darling.

After news of Wilde’s relationship with fellow costar Harry Styles emerged, some theorized that she had been too engulfed with their romance that she prioritized him over Pugh, or she had been too distracted that Pugh had to step in to direct scenes.

“It is very rare that people assume the best from women in power. I think they don’t often give us the benefit of the doubt,” Wilde said. “Florence did the job I hired her to do, and she did it exquisitely. She blew me away. Every day I was in awe of her, and we worked very well together. It is ironic that now, with my second film—which is again about the incredible power of women, what we’re capable of when we unite, and how easy it is to strip a woman of power by using other women to judge and shame them—we’re talking about this.”

She added, “The idea that I had five seconds in the day to be distracted by anything is laughable. I was there before everyone. I was there after everyone. And it was a dream. It’s not like this work was not enjoyable. It was just all-encompassing.”

The rumors were only strengthened by Pugh’s perceived silence during the promo run of Don’t Worry Darling; her lack of social media posts about the film and her absence from the cast’s press conference at the Venice Film Festival only seemed to confirm the hearsay.

Florence is one of the most in-demand actresses in the universe,” Wilde said. “She’s on set on Dune. I gather that some people expect for her to be engaging more on social media. I didn’t hire her to post. I hired her to act. She fulfilled every single expectation I had of her. That’s all that matters to me.”

Even after the spectacle at the Venice Film Festival, in which the entire cast was hyper-scrutinized online, Wilde said, “Florence’s performance in this film is astounding. It’s just baffling to me that the media would rather focus on baseless rumors and gossip, thereby overshadowing her profound talent. She deserves more than that. As does the movie, and everyone who worked so hard on it.”

Pugh seemed to echo that sentiment while speaking to Harper’s BAZAAR for our September 2022 cover story.

“When it’s reduced to your sex scenes, or to watch the most famous man in the world go down on someone, it’s not why we do it. It’s not why I’m in this industry,” Pugh said. “Obviously, the nature of hiring the most famous pop star in the world, you’re going to have conversations like that. That’s just not what I’m going to be discussing because [this movie is] bigger and better than that. And the people who made it are bigger and better than that.”
