Pippa Middleton‘s father-in-law, David Matthews, 73, was charged with “rape of a minor by a person with authority over his victim,” in the French courts Thursday, reports the AFP.
According to the Telegraph, the assault allegedly took place between 1998 and 1999, and was reported to the police in 2017.
“I confirm that David M was placed in police custody on 27 March at the Brigade for the Protection of Minors Protection,” a French judicial official told the publication.
Matthews is the father of James Matthews, who married Pippa Middleton in May of 2017. Middleton is, of course, the only sister of the Duchess of Cambridge.
Formerly a door-to-door car salesman, David Matthews currently owns the tony Eden Rock Hotel in St. Barths. He reportedly denies the accusations.
Neither Middleton nor the royal family has commented on the matter.
