The Kardashians are to blame for the rise in the number of millennial women undergoing cosmetic procedures, WWD reports. The past three years have seen “an explosion” in the popularity of non-invasive cosmetic procedures, with millennials now as likely to step into a clinic as the generation above them.
Where once it was almost exclusively reserved for Baby Boomers and their parents looking to remove the effects of aging, now women as young as 16 are heading to the clinics. The reason for this shift is because of social media, selfies and the Kardashians, Dr. Simon Ourien – who shot to fame with his work on Kim – argues.
“I can’t think of any other celebrity who has more impact on social media or on culture as a whole than they do,” he said. “That’s not debatable. They have more than half a billion social-media followers between them… That’s more than twice the size of the United States.”

“They want the bum of Kim Kardashian, the lips of Kylie Jenner – it’s like a puzzle. It becomes a bit crazy,” Dr Jean-Louis Sebagh said.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery released data this month revealing that between 2011 and 2016, the use of Botulinum Toxin (the formal name for the family of neurotoxin injectables) has increased by 87 percent.
While many doctors can agree on why there has been such a rise, not all of them think it is a good thing. Sebagh argues that many millennials have entered into a “narcissistic era” with the presence of celebrities on social media. Add to this the fact that the A list now tend to be much more open about work they’ve had done – where it was once taboo – and their millions of followers want to emulate them.
“It’s damaging; it’s absolutely mad,” Sebagh says. “Because of social media and all that, they have such insecurity and such image-perfection issues. They just communicate with their smartphones – it’s unstoppable.”
