ANGELINA JOLIE AND BRAD PITT
In the hands-down most shocking celebrity breakup of the year, Jolie surprised the world when she filed for divorce from Pitt in September. The A-list couple, who share six children together, wed in 2014 after dating since 2004. While the divorce papers cite "irreconcilable differences," sources alleged that a fight involving Pitt and one of the children caused Jolie to ultimately file. Since the split, the couple has entered family therapy and Jolie was temporarily awarded custody of the children.
AMBER HEARD AND JOHNNY DEPP
After just one year of marriage, Heard filed for divorce from Depp back in May, citing "irreconcilable differences." One day later, the actress filed a domestic violence restraining order against the actor, alleging that he was abusive in their relationship. Following a months-long (and not so friendly) battle, Heard dismissed her domestic violence restraining order and Depp paid the actress $7 million in a settlement—all of which she donated to charity.
LADY GAGA AND TAYLOR KINNEY
After more than five years together, the couple broke off their engagement over the summer. Gaga announced the news on Instagram, writing, "Taylor and I have always believed we are soulmates. Just like all couples we have ups and downs, and we have been taking a break. We are both ambitious artists, hoping to work through long-distance and complicated schedules to continue the simple love we have always shared. Please root us on. We're just like everybody else and we really love each other." Since then, however, the couple has not been spotted together and the singer admitted her new song "Perfect Illusion" was inspired by Kinney.
JOSHUA JACKSON AND DIANE KRUGER
Amidst a summer of celebrity breakups, Jackson and Kruger also announced their split back in July. The couple dated for 10 years but ultimately decided to part ways and remain friends, with sources saying their hectic schedules were to blame.
DRAKE AND RIHANNA
Though we never fully got confirmation of an official Drake and Rihanna relationship or breakup, something definitely went on and fizzled out between these two this year. The on-and-off-again duo collaborated for the singer's steamy "Work" music video, kicking off a series of flirt-filled performances throughout spring and summer. It escalated to the next level when Drake bought a billboard to congratulate Riri and then surprised everyones at the VMAs to present her the Vanguard Award where he admitted he's "been in love with Rihanna since he was 22." Despite their matching tattoos, saying "I love you" and flirty performances, the couple reportedly broke up in October—for now, that is.
CARA DELEVINGNE AND ST. VINCENT
The ultra-stylish couple dated for 18 months, gracing several front rows together before splitting in September. Though neither spoke out publicly on the breakup, sources reported that "pressures of the long-distance romance just became too much." Since then, St. Vincent (née Annie Clark), has reportedly started dating Kristen Stewart.
BELLA HADID AND THE WEEKND
Hadid and The Weeknd quickly rose as the It supermodel-musician couple of the moment when they began dating in 2015. The model starred in his music video for "In The Night" and the couple attended several award shows arm-in-arm throughout their relationship. But just two weeks ago, it was announced that the young couple called it quits amicably, citing busy work schedules. Later this month, they'll cross paths again at the Victoria's Secret Fashion show, where Hadid will be walking for the first time and The Weeknd will be performing for the second year in a row.
MARIAH CAREY AND JAMES PACKER
Following an engagement (and a casual 35 carat diamond ring) in January, Carey and Packer split last month. The not-so-amicable breakup has since resulted in Carey reportedly demanding a $50 million "inconvenience fee" from Packer. The Australian billionaire was the one who apparently called off the engagement after arguments about Carey's upcoming reality show and "extravagant spending." No word yet on that $50 million fee yet though...
JENNIFER LOPEZ AND CASPER SMART
The couple reportedly called it quits for good in August after dating on and off since 2011. Smart, who was a backup dancer for Lopez, was 18 years younger than the singer. While neither released a statement regarding their breakup, a source told People, "it wasn't anything dramatic and they were on good terms."
BROOKLYN BECKHAM AND CHLOE GRACE MORETZ
The teen couple started dating in 2014 and despite breaking up in 2015, started dating again earlier this year. After a number of cute interviews, couple Instagram pics and even a red carpet debut, Beckham and Moretz quietly called it quits again in September.
NAOMI WATTS AND LIEV SCHREIBER
After 11 years together, the Hollywood couple announced they decided to separate. A joint statement read, "Over the past few months we've come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple. It is with great love, respect, and friendship in our hearts that we look forward to raising our children together and exploring this new phase of our relationship." Watts and Schreiber never married but share two children: Alexander, 9, and Samuel, 7.
JUSTIN BIEBER AND SOFIA RICHIE
Though their romance was short-lived, it was filled with plenty of drama when the two began dating during the summer. After Bieber fans attacked Richie online, he went on an Instagram spree posting pictures of his new flame and threatened to delete his account if fans didn't stop—causing ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez to jump in and defend his fans. Bieber went on to delete his Instagram (which he never re-activated) and shortly after he and Richie vacationed in Mexico together to ring in her 18th birthday. But the summer fling ended as quickly as it began and the two broke up after just one month of dating.
TAYLOR SWIFT AND CALVIN HARRIS
In another drama-filled breakup, Swift and Harris announced their breakup after dating for over a year. While at first things seemed amicable (Harris even tweeted that he still had "love and respect" for Swift), it quickly escalated when Swift jumped into a whirlwind relationship with Tom Hiddleston just weeks later. Upon seeing photos of Swift and Hiddleston together, Harris deleted his tweet and every trace of Taylor from his social accounts. Then, more drama ensued when Taylor Swift revealed that she was the one who wrote Harris's hit song featuring Rihanna, "This Is What You Came For." Sources revealed that some drama with the song was the real reason behind the couple's split, but neither Harris nor Swift addressed those rumors.
TAYLOR SWIFT AND TOM HIDDLESTON
Which leads us to Swift's second big breakup of the year: Tom Hiddleston. After a dance-off at the Met Gala in May, the two began dating in June, just weeks after Swift's split with Harris. The summer fling turned into a very public (and global) display of affection with the couple spotted in Rhode Island, Nashville, Australia, Italy and the UK (where Swift met Hiddleston's family). But after three short months of "Hiddleswift" (and let's not forget Hiddleston wearing an "I Heart TS" tank top), the couple broke up quietly.
DREW BARRYMORE AND WILL KOPELMAN
Back in April, Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman announced they were divorcing after three years of marriage. The couple, who shares two young daughters, released a statement saying, "Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on. Our children are our universe, and we look forward to living the rest of our lives with them as the first priority."
JENNIFER MEYER AND TOBEY MAGUIRE
After nine years of marriage, the actor and jewelry designer announced their divorce. The couple's split was reportedly amicable and they announced their priority would be co-parenting their two children, daughter Ruby, 9, and son Otis, 7.
