‘Emily In Paris’ Is Getting Another Season On Netflix

Netflix's Emily in Paris is the frilly, sexy, and ridiculous escape the Internet can't stop talking about—for better or worse.

From the creator of Sex and the City and Younger (Darren Star), the comedy series follows Emily, played by Lily Collins, a rising marketing whiz who uproots from Chicago to Paris for an unexpected new role. As she stumbles her way through her posh, icy workplace and her new Parisian stomping grounds, she makes some friends along the way, like Mindy (Ashley Park), the stylish au pair; Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), the dreamy chef who lives downstairs; and a handful of French lovers.

By the end of the 10-episode series—spoiler alert!—Emily and Gabriel finally spend the night together after he breaks things off with his girlfriend, Camille (Camille Razat). But, he's set to leave for Normandy to start his own restaurant. In the final scenes, though, the plans change and Gabriel is able to continue working at his bistro in Paris, which is great news for Emily ... until Camille finds out and seems to want to reunite with her old flame. "Can we talk?" she texts Emily in a cliffhanger ending.

After Netflix viewers binged (and hate-watched) their way through the series, Emily earned two 2021 Golden Globe nominations—a surprise that caused uproar as the nominee pool was glaringly lacking in diversity. Still, the show will continue on for a second season, which was announced at the end of last year.

Here's what we know about Emily's next chapter.

Netflix has officially renewed Emily in Paris for a second season.

The streaming company cheekily announced the news on November 11 with Savoir (the company Emily works for) letterhead, featuring a note from Emily's boss, Sylvie Grateau (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu).

"We hope that by extending her time in Paris, Emily will further the relationships she has already made, delve deeper into our culture, and perhaps pick up a few words of French," she wrote.

The cast also virtually reunited to break the news in a joint video.

Production has started.

Season 2 has begun filming, the cast of Emily in Paris revealed in a video montage. Collins and her costars appear in selfie clips announcing their return to the set. A press release from the series revealed that cameras started rolling again on May 3.

New cast members have been added.

In Season 2, some new faces will join Collins (Emily), Ashley Park (Mindy), Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (Sylvie), Lucas Bravo (Gabriel), Samuel Arnold (Julian), Camille Razat (Camille), and Bruno Gouery (Luc).

Lucien Laviscount (Scream Queens) has been cast in the recurring role of Alfie, "a 30-year-old, London-born, sarcastic charmer who refuses to immerse himself in French culture and instead prefers a pint at an English-speaking pub," according to Entertainment Weekly. Do we sense a potential new love interest for Emily?

Jeremy O. Harris, the writer behind Slave Play and Zola, will guest-star as Gregory Elliott Dupree, a fashion designer and protégé of Pierre Cadault.

French actor Arnaud Binard will also guest-star, playing Laurent G, a nightclub owner whom Emily meets while promoting one of her brands, "but soon learns that his connection to Savoir is more complicated than marketing," according to EW.

Meanwhile, William Abadie, who plays Maison Lavaux owner Antoine Lambert, will play a series regular in Season 2.

Darren Star already has plans for what's next.

Even before Netflix officially renewed the series, Darren Star was brainstorming what's next for Emily and co.

"In season 2, she's going to be more of a part of the fabric of the world she's living in. She'll be more of a resident of the city," he told OprahMag.com. "She'll have her feet on the ground a little more. She's making a life there."

Collins, who is also a producer on the series, told Vanity Fair that Netflix is waiting to see how the show is received after the premiere.

Star also told E! News, "I don't know about season two yet, but I think Emily has some surprising tough choices. The show's so much about the culture undermining her expectations of how things are and how things seem. And everything will not be as it seems. It's always about challenging her American worldview. We certainly have a lot of forks in the road and a lot of places to go."

Lily Collins is eager for more.

"I really hope we get to go into more episodes, because there's so much that it leaves you hanging with. Emily has had to kind of pivot so many times in this experience already that I think she's ready and able to kind of just go with it and see what happens," Collins told BAZAAR.com. "But I kind of love that Emily's going into all these new situations just open-minded, and she's not judging it, and she's not judging herself."

She also told Vanity Fair, "I would love nothing more than to be able to go back to Paris and do [a new season]." Apparently, Collins, Star, and the crew were inspired with more ideas as they filmed Season 1 in the French capital.

"There were so many situations that we were like, ‘Okay, write that down. That’s going to happen in season two,'" Collins added. She also noted that there could be potential for Emily to go abroad to a nearby country. "That would be so much fun," she said.

For a possible second season, Collins imagines Emily in more places across Europe, and not just Paris. "At some point, I was joking with Darren and said, 'Couldn't they just, like, hop on the Eurostar and, like, have a British excursion?'" she told us. "I think it could be Emily going to all these different places. It's Emily in … and then insert the city. She could just take the train and go all over Europe, and Mindy and her could go together."

She added, "I think that there's so much personality that we can dive into more in the second season if we get to go."

Season 2 could explore supporting characters.

“We have a great world of characters that we’ve established,” Star told VF. “I’d like to explore so much more of the supporting cast, like Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, who plays Emily’s boss [Sylvie]. I think we’ve just scratched the surface of who she is and what makes her tick."

Ashley Park is also interested in exploring Mindy's love life in the next season. "I trust what's planned," she told OprahMag.com. "But a love interest would be fun! But the most important thing to me is the friendship with Emily."

And Bravo thinks there's a "huge field of opportunities" for Gabriel and Emily's relationship in a follow-up season.

Lucas Bravo hopes Gabriel can get a new restaurant.

If another season is confirmed, Bravo would love to see his character thrive in the restaurant business. In the finale, Gabriel nixes his plans to set up shop in his hometown of Normandy when he gets a generous offer to stay at his Parisian eatery.

"I hope he's going to get a brand-new restaurant where he will be able to bloom and do what he wants," Bravo told BAZAAR.com. "Because he was still a little constricted in the old one. I just want to see his creative mind at work in a new place, backed up by Antoine."

In terms of his relationships, with both Camille and Emily, he said, "Darren is orchestrating everything, and we're just playing the instruments."

Collins is open to a Carrie Bradshaw cameo.

Given the show's creator, wardrobe, and fun, flirty premise, it's easy to draw comparisons between Emily and the iconic Carrie Bradshaw, made famous by Sarah Jessica Parker. But while Collins thinks her character was certainly inspired by the SATC star, Emily "[stands] alone." When Variety suggested that Bradshaw make a cameo in Emily Season 2, the actress was very excited about the idea.

"I would love that," Collins said. "I feel like maybe that needs to happen. I might tell Darren about that. She could be like an apparition. Emily walks by, and there’s a reflection in a window, and she looks in, but she sees Carrie. Then it goes back and it’s her, and she’s like, 'What?' I think that’d be kind of great."

Emily is "still exploring" her romantic prospects.

“I don’t know what they’re writing right now, but I think it would be a little early for Emily to lock something in,” Collins told Deadline of the future of Emily's romance with Gabriel (or anyone).

"I think she’s still exploring the prospects," she added. "Honestly I think Emily doesn’t even know [what will happen], and that’s the beauty of the way that they write the show. She has yet to find all the qualities she maybe is looking for. But that being said, there is that connection with Gabriel, but now she has Camille in that love triangle, so I think there’s still experiences to be had, adventure to be had and she’s still finding herself."

Filming has officially wrapped for Season 2.

Collins took to Instagram to share behind-the-scenes photos of the Emily in Paris cast wrapping up filming for the show's second season.

"French life on film. We are officially wrapped on @emilyinparis Season 2 and I still cannot quite believe it. Being in Paris with my family and with this cast and crew over the last 4 months and on set for 67 days has been the most memorable experience and I will cherish every second of it," Collins wrote alongside the post. "Grateful for this team and all of the joy and smiles they bring to work each day. You make it magical. I can’t wait for you guys to see what we have in store for round two. Á bientôt! Bisous!"

Collins also shared an adorable snapshot with her costar Ashley Park from their dressing room.

The actress even hinted at the possibility of a third season of the hit Netflix show already being underway, writing, "I'm leaving here filled with so many amazing memories, special moments with my family, endless appreciation to our incredible dedicated and talented crew, and another season officially wrapped! Very excited to share it with you all soon. We're heading home, but keeping a little piece of us here until the next time."

Season 2 is teasing a new love interest for Emily.

Netflix gave fans a first glimpse at the second season of Emily in Paris with a new set of images, one of which features Emily with a possible new love interest.

"Now more entrenched in her life in Paris, Emily’s getting better at navigating the city but still struggling with the idiosyncrasies of French life," the official synopsis from Netflix reads. "After stumbling into a love triangle with her neighbor and her first real French friend, Emily is determined to focus on her work—which is getting more complicated by the day. In French class, she meets a fellow expat who both infuriates and intrigues her."

Season 2 premieres on December 22.

Looks like we'll be spending our holiday vacation with Netflix. The streamer announced that Emily in Paris Season 2 will premiere on Wednesday, December 22, and also dropped a teaser with new footage. The clip shows Emily and her friends sailing off to St.-Tropez for a vacation with luxury hotels, lavish parties, and gorgeous selfie backgrounds. The teaser ends with the phrase, “Your French holiday awaits!”

The producers prioritized diversity and inclusion for Season 2.

Collins told ELLE UK that she and the show's producers have increased diversity and POC representation in the second season, in response to viewer feedback about Season 1.

"For me as Emily, but also as a producer on [the show], after season one, hearing people's thoughts, concerns, questions, likes, dislikes, just feelings about it, there were certain things that spoke to the time that we're living in and what's right, and moral and correct and should be done. And [that was] something that I felt passionate about. [The producers] all believed in the same things," she said.

She also shared that the changes took place both in front of and behind the camera, including giving some characters new storylines.

"I really wanted diversity and inclusion in front of and behind the camera to be something that we really put our focus on, in a lot of ways. Hiring new people in front of the camera, also giving new storylines to different characters, which was really important," she added.
