Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding cake will be made by pastry chef Claire Ptak, owner of the London-based Violet Bakery, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

Ptak uses seasonal, organic ingredients and "limited-edition buttercream icing" in her cakes, which she first sold at a stall in east London's Broadway Market before opening her cafe in 2010.

While we're yet to see the finished design, the details of Harry and Meghan's choice suggest it will break from the tradition of towering fruit cakes favoured by royal couples throughout history.

"Prince Harry and Ms. Markle have asked Claire to create a lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate the bright flavours of spring," the palace said in a statement. "It will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers." The palace also confirmed that Markle has previously met Ptak; she once interviewed her for her former lifestyle website, The Tig.

Many of the wedding cakes Ptak has shared on Instagram are adorned with colourful fresh flowers and fruits, along with a thick layer of buttercream.

While cakes iced in buttercream are now the trend at modern weddings, this hasn't been the case at royal nuptials gone by. Here's a reminder of how they have looked in previous years.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

In 2011, Prince William and Kate Middleton chose a traditional eight-tier design made by businesswoman Fiona Cairns. The fruit cake was covered in white icing and decorated with sugar flowers. It was reported that the couple also commissioned a second wedding cake, based on one of Prince William's favourites - a chocolate Tiffin.

The Duke of Kent and Katherine Worsley

This cake, which was five feet in height, reportedly took two men six weeks to make ahead of the Duke of Kent's 1961 wedding. The delicate design incorporated the couple's new coat of arms, which was hand painted in sugar panels on the base tier. The middle tier featured a St George and the Dragon motif and the Yorkshire rose, while the monograms of the bride and groom - E in pale blue and K in pink - appeared on the top tier.
