Singapore’s Odette Slips To No. 36 On The World’s 50 Best Restaurants List 2022
Restaurants in Asia displayed a weaker showing on the list compared to last year.
Contemporary French fine-dining restaurant Odette, which is helmed by Julien Royer, is the sole Singapore entry at No. 36 on this year’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants List, which was announced in London on Monday (18 July).
The restaurant dropped 28 spots from its No. 8 position last year, when it made the cut for the highly-coveted Top 10 list at — a first for a Singapore restaurant.
Copenhagen’s Geranium, which is led by chef Rasmus Kofoed, was crowned No. 1 on the list, which was unveiled at a glitzy awards ceremony hosted by Hollywood star Stanley Tucci in the Old Billingsgate events space in London.

The restaurant, which also won the Best Restaurant in Europe, has been on a steady ascent on the list in recent years, ranking No. 19 in 2018, No. 5 in 2019 & 2020, and No. 2 last year. Geranium announced its recent decision to go meatless, focusing on seafood and vegetables.
Last year’s No. 1 restaurant Noma, which is also in Copenhagen, has been elevated to the Best of the Best category, a hall of fame for those who have been previously crowned No. 1 on the list. The acclaimed restaurant had taken the pole position on the list in 2021, 2014, 2012, 2011 and 2010.

Coming in at No. 2 is modern Peruvian restaurant Central in Lima, Peru, which is helmed by power couple Virgilio Martínez and Pía León. The couple is fronting a chef pop-up in Singapore that starts from 5 August to 30 August. Central was ranked No. 4 on last year’s list.
Restaurants in Asia displayed a weaker showing on the list compared to last year. The Best Restaurant in Asia went to Den in Tokyo (No. 20), which dropped from its No. 11 position last year. Hong Kong’s The Chairman is at No. 24, which fell from its No. 10 position last year, while Tokyo’s Narisawa, which was ranked No. 19 last year, is now at No. 45.
On a positive front, Tokyo’s Florilège restaurant jumped 9 spots to its No. 30 position this year.
A total of 12 restaurants made their debut on the list, including Uliassi (No.12) in Senigallia, Italy, which serves contemporary cuisine that pays homage the traditions of the Adriatic Coast.

3 Singapore restaurants on the 51-100 Long list
Modern Nordic restaurant Zén (No. 70), modern Australian barbecue restaurant Burnt Ends (no. 94) and contemporary Korean restaurant Meta (No. 95) entered on the World’s 50 Best long list, which was revealed earlier this month. Zén and Meta made their debut appearance on the list, while Burnt Ends slipped from its No. 34 position last year.
The global ranking of restaurants is by UK-based media company William Reed, which runs events and media brands that span the food and beverage, hospitality, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries.
The list is put together by a voting panel of 1,080 food writers, critics, restaurateurs and gourmands from 27 regions across the world. Each of them could vote anonymously for 10 restaurants in their home region or beyond in the past 18 months since the previous edition of the awards.
